I had an idea to make a color potion(s) for sheep if it was just one potion it could turn sheep a random color or you could have individual potions for each color
Bottle of water + wheat + dye = color potion(s)
This would be a lot better then dyeing wool cause you get an endless supply of colored wool instead of having to harvest wool and dye and hope you have enough dye for the wool
yes... I never really learned from the wiki this specific thing, as I actually tried dying the sheep directly in the first place...lol It does have some info that is not relevant to xbox so be careful of those. Just go when you need to learn about a specific thing.
Althought I do like the random color potion idea, that would make a bit of a gamble, or a bit of fun just tossing potions at sheep to see what color they end up as ....lol

I guess to have the option there if you have oodles of wool in storage, but want a different color and don't want to go out to dye sheep. So probably just something to start out with before you have a farm. Right now though with all the sheep around I do agree that it is a bit ridiculous, but think of it this way...
Those whom make a spider spawner can turn string into wool and go from there and dye it, even if you do get more from shearing. Eventually though I think the population will be adjusted so there are not so many sheep around, possibly sometime either when regrowth comes to the game or sometime afterwards...

I have 4 sheep pens currently - red, blue, green and yellow. I keep 2 of each color. Breed them until I have 4, sheer two then kill them. Keeps me well stocked on colored wool, not that I use that much. White, brown, grey and black are common enough I don't bother with them.

This would be my point, you don't have that at the beginning.... pens full of colored sheep do not appear out of nowhere. After those are made there would be no need to do directly... and sooner or later there will not be as many herds and flocks roaming around.... At least in a new game when that happens. Granted it might not be as bad as 1.8.2 when it first came out, but still...

Think its bonemeal that makes white. I don't make white dye, so not 100% sure - guess I could check the wikis out there, lol.
I think my colored pens of sheep are funny. As I approach I see the yellow sheep first, this yellow box jumping up and down (my pens are small, so not much room for them to wander).

They don't grow the wool back yet. I left one sheered sheep for like weeks of game time, in a grassy out-door area and nada. So, I sheer 'n' kill. Thus the endless cycle of breed to get 4, sheer 2, kill two, breed to get 4, etc. I keep it to 4 to a pen so the don't despawn (I have other animals in my pen area (cows, chickens, my puppies, and sheep). I don't bother with pigs (I have wheat coming out of my ears so food isn't what I need).

I didn't say anything about wanting white wool i was referring to dyeing wool via crafting instead of dyeing the sheep cause i asked the point of dyeing wool if you can dye the sheep but i forgot about spider wool
