I was trying to build the Xisuma chicken cooker design that I have seen also work on PE through a few tutorials. The hopper system works fine, the Dropper/comparator system works fine. The lava blade fails to kill adult chickens.
If i am in a creative world and use spawn chicken eggs they die the way they are supposed to and I get cooked chicken and feathers. However when chickens are allowed to grow from baby chickens from launched eggs they do not die. I do not understand why. I would greatly appreciate any advice.
I had made this one and it worked mostly fine up through the 0.15.9 update. There are some wonky things that happen with chickens glitching into the hopper behind the lava blade. I was getting a ton of eggs in the chest instead of chicken.
That part seems to be fixed now, but I haven't seen the amount of chicken in the chest increase, so I don't know if the cooker is working any more.
I made a lava blade with a water trough leading to it. Spawned 20 chickens.
2 were not killed and escaped the blade.
6 chicken.
1 feather.
0 cooked chicken.
I also tried cows and pigs. Same results. Nothing was cooked.
Tried using the trough to drop the chickens on top of the lava blade.
0 survived.
0 chicken.
0 feathers.
0 cooked chicken.
In short- epic fail.
Based on my experiments, it's like it has been. Mob grinders (in Win10).... don't. The ratio of drops from any grinder design (and I've tried them all) is much less than if you went out and just killed the mob yourself.
SO, my advice is to: go hunting, then cook it the old fashion way.
I've been rather frustrated with MC Win10 edition lately. It seems that every redstone contraption I try fails, when I see countless YouTube videos of it working in the PC Java version. The automated chicken farm has just been the latest. The most frustrating part is that it was working, and then after the latest updates, it's stopped. The problem I have is the baby chickens / adult chickens jump up into the lava and get incinerated instead of adult chickens getting a quick lava flash, catching on fire, and then appropriately meeting their demise.
My solution for now; I have feeder chickens laying eggs which are shot out from a dispenser into a fenced in area. Then I go kill the adults and throw the meat into an automatic furnace. Not the best, but better than nothing.
When will redstone behave more like the Java version? I really want to have a working double piston extender!
Win10 was never suppose to be a "replacement for" or "duplicate" of the java version. It is it's own game, just like all the other editions are. Some things work the same- some don't. Those expecting Win10 to be or act "just like" the java version will be quite frustrated and disappointed.
* On the other hand, I really want it to be different! There's some things about the java version I don't like and I hope Win10 ends up doing some things better. No more "But that's the way we've always done it." Been there, done that. Let's do things a new, better, way.
* It's still in beta. It's not done yet. More changes and additions are coming. It (and PE) has come a long way in the last year, and they're not finished.
* Win10's gameplay philosophy seems to be automation and mobs don't mix. Automated mob grinders, experience farms, etc. don't hardly work (or work at all). It's much more efficient if you kill (and in this case, cook) the mob yourself. Personally, I like that.

MC Win10 0.16.0
I have the same question. I hope someone can give us some guidance.
Do you have a video about it? I'm a redstoner, I can help if you need any.
