how do i create a map? i use 8 paper and one compass and nothing happens. is the recipe for a map different now? nor did i start out with a map... any help?
Join what? Other people on servers? You can play Win10-to-Win10 on LAN, or Win10-to-PE via Live (add as Friends), or Win10-to-PE servers. And Realms is coming.
Yes, people actually play this, and we play it just fine... millions of us. It's Minecraft.... abet vanilla Minecraft... with no mods or anything. And no, it doesn't have all the "stuff" the java version does (yet), but it doesn't run like the java version either.
It says in the notes to 0.14.0 that you may combine a map and compass at the anvil. I did not manage to do this. Does this apply only to PE? I thought both versions were the same.
@Geneo: See the notes for the 0.14.0 release under "History" in the link you quoted. You may only craft a map without a marker in the crafting table (9 sheets of paper). Using the recipe with the compass does not work in PE/Win10. These notes also say that you may combine a "map" (which? empty or created? I have tried both) with a compass at the anvil. I have tried this in the Win10 version but it did not work. The release notes also state that map zooming is also carried out via the anvil - I have not tried this yet.
* Fill all 9 squares in a crafting table with Paper to make an Empty Map.
* While holding the Empty Map, use the "use" key, or right click the mouse. You get a Filled Map (w/o a marker).
* Take the Filled Map, put it in any outside square of the crafting table with a Compass in the middle square. You get a Filled Map With Marker. 2 Notes: A) a Map covers an specific section of the world- it is not centered on your location when you add the marker or when you created it. the top of the map is East, not North.
* To zoom the Map out, put the Filled Map (with or without the Marker), in the center square of the crafting table, and surround it with Paper. Each time you do it, it zooms the map out farther, up to 4 times. (Hover your mouse/cursor over the new map before you pick it up and it will tell you the scaling).
Not once did I use an Anvil (I tested this in Win10 as I wrote this post). In fact, I tried using an Anvil and I couldn't get anywhere. I have no idea why an Anvil was included in the Notes (or the wiki for that matter)- all it does is confuse people. All I can think of is that there's been several "14.0" builds, and there's been another update since then.
I, for one, don't care what the Notes say- I don't need an Anvil to make a Map, add a Marker, or zoom it.
another thing, the maps are so trash once you actually make one that only MY marker is showing up so I can't see my friend and since they don't have coordinates, an now I'm lost and can't find my friend... WINDOWS 10 MC SUCKSSSS

It's your personal map- not a group map.
Coordinates are coming. Just hang on.
To me, maps are worthless right now. The only thing they're good for is for decoration. You sure can't depend on them for navigation! That's why I've said for years, build your home near the spawn point. That way a compass will always lead you back home no matter how far you wander off.
There's something else about maps I found out the hard way. If you go "off map" there's a dot along the edge that tells you the opposet direction to go to get back on the map. (For instance, if the dot is at the top (East), then you need to go West to get back on the map). But, there's something else! (Besides the "notes" in my post above). If you keep on traveling anyway, and get two maps away, the dot on the original map disappears. Now you're really lost and don't know the proper direction to go to get back home- and making another map won't help.
That's why I said, for now, maps are only good for decoration. Do not depend on them for navigation! Until they add coordinates, a compass is the only thing you can depend on.
But Win10 doesn't suck! It just needs further improvement, and it's being improved (additional features) with every update. Sheesh, it wasn't that long ago we didn't even have redstone, pistons, horses, etc. It's beta, give it a break.

It is not in the game. Remember that the Windows 10 Edition is an MCPE port. The full list of MCPE implemented content can be found here,

you can't craft any maps in windows 10 edition as of February 2016.
You never could craft a map.
Can't craft pistons either... yet. Wait till the next update.

A lot has change since Feb, and more changes are coming shortly.
Win10 (and PE) is growing up!

In both Win10 and PE, you don't need an Anvil. Just use a Crafting Table.
Not sure why the "notes" said you need an Anvil.

(Hey, it's beta, things change!)
Thanks for confirming this, much appreciated.
