I am using the vanilla server (.jar one, not .exe) on windows and have java updated. I have forwarded port 25565 on my router (to the correct computer) and firewall.
The server seems to run fine :
[INFO] Starting minecraft server version 1.2.5
[WARNING] To start the server with more ram, launch it as "java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar"
[INFO] Loading properties
[INFO] Starting Minecraft server on *:25565
[INFO] Preparing level "world"
[INFO] Default game type: 0
[INFO] Preparing start region for level 0
[INFO] Done (0.485s)! For help, type "help" or "?"
My problem is that I cannot connect using localhost (I am trying to connect on the same computer the server is running on), nor can my sever be seen from canyouseeme.org. For both of these the connection times out.
Nothing appears in the server log when I try to connect using localhost.
I have tried to connect, and check if the server can be seen, with all firewalls disabled (including the router's)- no change.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here is the config:
25565 is fine. Also, if nothings helpes, try adding your IPv4 at " server-ip= "
Results in an error:

I've just read that the BT Home Hub 3 has problems with port forwarding... I'll look into it, maybe dig up an older router and see if the problem persists. But would port forwarding effect connecting using "localhost"?
So I just tried changing the port (server-port=) and putting in my "ip address:port" in direct connect, but no dice.
Anyone got any clue what's wrong/what I've done wrong? Surely I should be able to easily log onto my own server!
I just updated, and there is no change. The file size is still 1376KB.
Here is exactly what I did: downloaded "minecraft_server.jar", put it in a folder called server within ".minecraft", created a ".bat" file using notepad with "java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui"
EDIT: sorry, that might be good info for other people, but it doesn't look like it's your problem
the 1st problem we gotta solve is that you should be able to connect using localhost
you should be able to use localhost and connect even when others cannot
that is very bizzare. Did you figure out if your hub was the issue ?
Sorry, I just noticed that EDIT! I haven't figured that out yet, but I'll try a different router soon. I don't see why my router would stop me connecting to a server running on my own computer though...

@Syfaro
Neither works
You're sure? Everywhere else I look says 25565, and my server.cfg says "server-port=25565".
Also, am I right in thinking that port-forwarding shouldn't affect a localhost connection?

Like this:
25565 to 25565 - (IPv4) - TCP-UDP
Yeah. I'm using a BT Home Hub 3 router, so I picked my computer from a list of devices to assign the port forwarding to.
An IPv4 looks like this 193.168.178.XX
I did put 5.104.40.6 as the server ip. But I just tried using one like 192.168.xxx.xxx, the same problem arises

can you please give us the size of the file: Minecraft_server.jar
Also, make sure it's NOT Minecraft-server.jar
there IS a difference.

looks like you need to update...
http://www.minecraft.net/download
let us know if this solves your problem
I know there was a client update yesterday, but my problem existed before that.... Oh well, I'll give it a go asap
