I've been having serious lag issues for the past week (ever since I started up my MC addiction again) and so far have not been able to find any real acknowledgement that any of the programmers are aware of what's going on. First to my machine specs:
Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate
AMD Phenom II X2 555 OC'd to 3.82GHZ
4 GB Ram
Nvidia GForce GTX 560
Java Ver. 7 Update 5
The issue:
I play in a normal, unmodified game and approx ~5-25 minutes later, for whatever reason, everything stops being completely smooth, and just lags and lags until the client finally screams in agony and dies (a.k.a closes out).
Possible issues:
Now, as far as I can research, a possible issue seems to be with the lighting effects of lava, nether, ect.. If I understand correctly, the block limit was increased from 128 to 256(ish) pending a few updates ago. Consequently, it demands so much processing with the constant checking of lighting on adjacent blocks that it eventually causes the game to bog down and crash.
However, I'm not entirely sure this is the case. Seeing as this seems to be an issue with machines of high performance and on 64-bit OS's, could the programmers mistakenly misplaced some coding to affect only 64 bit machines? Seems entirely likely.
But after scouring the forums for a solution to this issue I found none that were acceptable (I refuse to resort to using optifine or in-game video functions to decrease my performance to be able to play this game).
Does anyone currently have a fix for this issue? And if not, are you (developers) aware that this issue is affecting a sizable number of your player base? Thanks for your consideration.
1) The minecraft Dev's never come on here, just saying
2) Are you on a laptop computer, or a desktop computer?
3) You might have a virus that is making your game lagg so much
4) Optifine doesn't decrease your performance, it basically just turns off/on certain things like portal effects, rain, fog, etc.
5) Try (while running minecraft) going to your Task Manager, go into processes, and look for a "javaw.exe" and right click, and set the priority to high. This makes it so that when your running minecraft, it demands more (not much more) ram than any of the other processes.

1. Hadn't realized they cared so little for their client base. This saddens me quite a bit,
2. I'm running a desktop PC. They don't make a mobile version of the GTX 560.
3. I clean my machine on a daily basis and run an updated virus scan every night, and defrag every two weeks. I think I can eliminate any potential virus affecting my machine.
4. I phrased that incorrectly, what I meant to say was that I shouldn't be forced to lower the quality of the game in order to enhance it's performance. My hardware is more than sufficient to the point where lowering the quality of the game is not a fix, but a work-around.
5. I have read in other threads that this isn't necessarily a solution. Windows 7 is quite good at handling priorities as they come along. For the sake of troubleshooting, I'll leave my task manger open, run minecraft again, as check to see if my CPU usage is spiking really high. If it is, then I might mess around with the priorities but again, this is a work-around rather than a fix IMO. Most people who have tried this saw no appreciable difference in their performance.
It's actually, probably, your Internet connection. That's the only reason lagging like that would occur. Does your ISP cap you in any way? MineCraft probably detects that theres an error in the connection, doesn't know what to do after recieving broken data and crashes.
Its neither from what I can tell so far. Starting early last week theres been a wide spread drop in the game's performance despite the game code being unmodified since April (1.2.5). Most signs point to some kind of memory leak, but java or major video card drivers haven't had a new version pushed in months. The closest is probably the Diablo hot fix, but so far it hasn't shown to be part of the trend.
That leaves Anti-virus programs, Malware and Windows components as the major suspects. Windows had a update that week concerning a windows kernel driver, and the time frame is suspiciously similar to when the reports started rolling in. However, some are claiming unexplained FPS drops from as far back as the week before that, making it difficult to identify if this is part of the problem or not.
Another issue making profiling difficult is that not all system appear to be affected, so its likely a combination of factors, or one very obscure yet common factor involved.
After a little experimentation, I've discovered that in my case, CPU usage is so high that it causes a 'run-away' effect, meaning MC just demands more and more CPU power until it finally crashes. Strange as that may be, it seems to pump out 144 fps consistently with no issues (runs at 30-40% CPU usage, which is normal and tolerable) for 10 minutes, then suddenly spikes up to 100% without any notice, lags out, and crashes.
My ISP does not have capping, and I have a 15 MBPS cable connection.
Could be a possible memory leak, but my memory consistently stayed within 73-75% usage, which again, is very tolerable.
If I were to guess at this point, I'd fall back on either the coding in MC causing a weird issue, or possibly java having coding issues, or possibly both. From what I can tell, most of the people affected seems to have 64-bit machines. Best guess: someone got the coding wrong and 64-bit can't handle it. Could even be Microsoft's fault as well.
I'll let you know more when I do a little more experimentation.

.... The Minecraft forums are NOT run by the devs. They are run by Curse.
