I port forwarded my server a couple different ways today and all of them ended with others not being able to get on. One way I went to my ip on the browser and set up the port (25565). Then I used no-ip.com to make a host's name and from there the tutorial i was watching didnt explain what to do next and so i quit. My next attempt was to open a different type of port and port forward it through without using no-ip.com, and still no luck. I need help on this by this Sat because im hosting a hunger games i have made personally (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1184103-minecraft-hunger-games-map-by-nightshadowz/), so it would be nice if you can help me forums.
What does the error say when the packet (ping) returns? If you cant ping your router it would mean there is no internet access. Also you cannot ping an extrenal IP from within a network due to NAT. you need Reverse NAT or IP masq to do that which only high end modem routers have (such as the fritzbox and other business modem routers). Also when you want to host something it would be a good idea to use "canyouseeme.org" and choose the port you opened with that you want your players to connect with. that will tell you if you have the port correctly open. Make sure your computer has a static IP as well. No-ip is great as i use it too when my IP changes (if it ever does).
If you need more help you need to be more specific

I used a portfarwarding.com's port checker and it said there is no ping. I just tried the canyouseeme.org and tested 25565 and it keeps on timing out. I used no-ip.org and got the url, but don't know what to do with it.

No-ip can be used as a dns tool. What that means is that you can put a website name that represents your external IP address. E.G.
happyMC.com --> 204.46.44.498 (IP is made up and so is the name)
If there is no response from the port checker tools then you probably didnt portforward properly. Also you cannot ping your external address without reverse NAT.

Please post your network configuration. Like so.
<D-Link modem router 10.1.1.1> <Netgear router 192.168.1.1><PC 192.168.1.202>
Something like that would make it easier for me to imagine your network
