Hello and thank you for reading this post.
I've decided to make this forum post for two reasons,
One is to raise awareness to others and possibly the Mojang team about our serious problem.
Second is to have a topic for people with the same problem to go and add their story.
So, now the actual problem.
You may know about it already but for you who don't -
Many people after updating to 1.2 and over of Minecraft have been getting horrible and annoying lag spikes. The lag contains of FPS drops such as in my case, *108 Fps to 5FPS*, and major memory usage or RAM.
Here is an example of what it looks like when you press F3:
Now you may be thinking that this is just the usual old lag that happens all the time and we're just posting about it now.
Well, from my experience I've never ever lagged before like this. I used to be able to play on fullscreen for a good 2 hours and not get a dabble of lag. And i'm sure most of you haven't lagged before 1.2 either. So this is why we are posting about it now. I've tried game booster and all that good stuff but none of it has worked. I hope to try out Optifine when it get's updated but we'll have to wait.
So what I hope this post will do is possibly get Mojang or other very smart people to find out why this is happening after the 1.2 update and if they can fix it or what we can do.
How you can contribute to this post:
Just post a comment with "Bump" or w/e the hell you want to put.
In the comment, put your average FPS and put what your FPS drops to during the lag.
If you want you can add a picture.
If we can get a lot of people to bump this I'm sure someone is going to do something about the lag. Maybe they are already but anyway, this is just the proof.
Thanks for reading!
*-----------------------------------------------------------UPDATE------------------------------------------------------*
I have come accross something interesting that adds to this post.
*One day, I made a mountain. I decided to climb my mountain. When I was above the old height limit, I started to lag. And what I found out was I started to lag MORE when looking DOWN for some reason. The only thing I am thinking is "Anvil Problem".*
Anyways, thoughts? Ideas? Please post them on my forum topic about 1.2 Lag. Thank you

I do want to tell you guys though, I have tried the optifine mods, the first 3 on the topic page of it I think..but anyway, they do seem to have worked! They actually work very well. If you are avoiding trying to use the mod trust me, it's worth it. It's not a mod where you drop your files into minecraft and the game get's faster, It's a mod that adds in many, many, many more options to the video settings section which will ultimately improve your gameplay. It has worked for me I will say, as in I can play for quite some time and not get lag spikes anymore. Although If I leave minecraft running for say, more than an hour it will get a lag spike. BUT that's it!
So I really encourage you to try out the optifine mods to try to solve your gameplay and lag problems. If it doesn't than that's what this topic is for.
I'm not done with this though, I honestly really want to find out why us minecrafters all of a sudden lag when we've never lagged before? Or atleast and answer telling us that "Oh yeah we added something that some computers might not handle." I would still get pissed off though.
Optifine doesnt work and the difference between a 32x32 texture pack and defauly 16x16 doesn't make a difference in lag.
When I start the game i notice i get usually 30fps than a slow drop occurs, after further looking into the matter i notice Cache stores aren't being emptied causing ram overload.....

I do not have this problem, nor have I seen it that back as the picture provided. However, it must be impossible to play in such conditions. I have gotten a new computer recently, but my old one had this problem but with a lot less time span. This would only last for less than a second, but FPS would be at 0 until it's over. This would happen every 3 seconds or so. So I sort of know how it is/must be. Bump.
1.1 ran perfectly fine. In 1.2.3, I have had to change the view distance to short, just for the game to be playable. It wouldn't work at all for the very far setting.
Yeah, even I ever since I started using 1.2 have been getting more lag even with the Optifine mod. I do have a slow computer, but with this version it lags more than usual :/ I'm still playing 1.1.
I notice it seems to happen when Im looking higher up, if i keep my view pointed down its runs ok.. i think it may have something to do with hte world height now being double (think of it, double the force of minecraft running). I think we should go back to 128height.

Even with OptiFine installed I still get lag spikes. I normally ran (VSYNC with optifine) at a constant 60fps but now it drops to about 20 which can get annoying. (With or without OptiFine)
I found using MCPatcher's "reclaim GL memory" option in the 1.2.4 version helps. Seems to get rid of the annoying lag spikes although still not having as much fps as it should.

Which indicates possible problems with the new height. Perhaps an error properly saving the chunks?
I find Apple's OS prices amusing. They make you pay so much more for air, and many people think it's the OS that's putting on tons of money. But no, it's just the air inside the case.
im having the same problems since 1.2, it goes from 60 fps to 4 fps every 10 seconds, its really annoying and makes the game unplayable, my specs are intel i5 2430m, intel hd 3000, 4gb ram ddr3
I think I have found a cause of this problem. Moving 16 blocks away from a mob in water will cause the lag spike to happen. This only happens when moving away, moving towards the mob in water won't cause it.
Easy way to test:
1. Create a super-flat creative world
2. Make a 1x3 deep hole and put water in the bottom.
3. Spawn a mob in the hole
4. Note the cords of the hole and walk 16 blocks away in any direction (it's a sphere shaped distance from the mob, so up/down works too) and you'll get a lag spike.
Adding more mobs increases the intensity and duration of the spike.

However, these lag spikes are ridiculous...
It might have something to do with lighting but i'm not 100% sure.
