I'm not sure which is weirder - that Minecraft requires the correct date to connect to its server or that somehow my computer date got screwed up. Regardless, that fixed the problem - thanks!

Hey Guys, The issue involves mojangs ssl certificate expiring for the their login system, this is not a problem with your date, it is a problem with Mojang, The temporary solution is to set your date to anytime before the 23rd of Jan, this will allow the certificate to think it is not expired on your computer.
Aha. My date was set to March 2012! The day and time of day were correct but the month was 2 months ahead.
I have NO idea how that happened, and there's no way I did that, so there's something seriously glitchy going on with WinXP, or with something related such as its time server.
Most PC clocks lose time steadily. I use Neutron to correct the system clock on this box as a daily scheduled task. As a result, my date/time is within a second or two of perfect accuracy one hundred percent of the time. So this is a very odd occurrence.
According to Mollstam (Thanks Zixxl) the new Security Certificate is now in place. The login server should be functioning normally again, so everyone can fix their clocks and log in again.
EDIT: Will you stop that Firellius, lol
EDIT: and by stop that I mean beating me to the answer.

You're date set unto your computer, if the specific day is not correct, or the time, you cannot connect to the minecraft servers.
Well then a + rep for you for a + rep for me :smile.gif:
