are you one of those guys pirating the game with MinecraftSP if so, minecraft does not work in multiplayer if you pirate the game, it simply doesn't work, that message is what you get when you are playing offline (not signed in) and trying to play on an official server

not true my friend used it for a while and it worked sometimes and other times he got this message.
Responses like this are annoying. Minecraft doesn't work, so the first thing everyone does is assume that people are pirating the game.
Well, I have been having this error in my fully purchased and licensed copy of Minecraft (I have three copies I have purchased, one for me, and two for my kids). Minecraft is apparently having some bugs and errors that cause this error and I am trying to track down a resolution so my family can play Minecraft on a private server that we paid good money to be able to play.
Despite that, there seems to be a bug causing this issue that is not resolved. People wasting time focusing on those that pirate the game instead of figuring out what the problem is really waste a lot of time for those of us who have paid for the game and are trying to find solutions.
This IS incredibly frustrating. People who are having this problem are just automatically assumed to have pirated it. So for the few of us who actually bought it legitimately and are having this issue, there just seems to be no fix or not even a willingness to help us. Minecraft's front page boasts about having sold 5 million + copies of the game...any chance some of those profits could go towards making sure there's more than 5 customer service reps?

Considering mojang only employs around 25 people, 5 ppl on customer service is actually a good chunk of their employees
I had the same problem. I found out that there are two different mine craft launchers. One that actually asks you to login to your account and one that does not. Guys, the one that doesn't log in before you enter the game, is not completely attached to your account. (maybe a glitch). you need to use the other MC launcher. IT WILL ask login info before launching the game. Comes from mine craft . net. when you login first you will not get this problem.
im having that problem right now...nobody has access to my info and im on minecraft.net right now...iv played on all of these servers earlier this morning but now none of them are letting me in O_O

2 Things I want from Minecraft: 1. The ability to disable Passive Mob Spawning in Creative Worlds(as in no cows, horses, pigs, sheep, squid, wolves, ocelots, horses or donkeys). 2. Make Healing Potions Instant Drink(Simple right click instead of holding down for 1.6 seconds).
If you have, then log out, make sure your password is right, and you connect properly.
Otherwise, just wait 24 hours as it might be minecraft.net being down.
