Try updating LWJGL >LWJGL 2.8.2<
Extract the file
Locate lwjgl-2.8.2\native\windows copy all files and paste them in .minecraft\bin\natives
Locate lwjgl-2.8.2\jars copy jinput.jar, lwjgl.jar, lwjgl_util.jar and paste them in .minecraft\bin

Same as some other folks. I hear animals, menu sounds, and damage sounds but nothing else. I've been experience sound issues since around ver 1.8. Usually restarting or using F3 + s gets it going, but it's not helping anymore.
I had attributed this to my dual sound card setup, but if other people are having the issue I don't think so anymore.

I had attributed this to my dual sound card setup, but if other people are having the issue I don't think so anymore.
On the login screen in the minecraft client, click options and click Force Update.
Updated all the lwjgl files as suggested. I deleted all the *x64.* files from /.minecraft/bin/natives. As a reference, I'm running 32bit Win7.
Sounds seem to be working again. I haven't extensively tested this yet so it could not be the answer.
