For those using laptops/notebooks etc with Nvidia Optimus video chips in them who've been getting terrible fps with the minecraft 1.9 versions; for some reason Minecraft is not activating the Nvidia chip, so it keeps using the beyond crappy intel chip.
There are a couple fixes for this that are causing a massive boost for minecraft, even on netbooks that have this chip:
If you have a laptop with Nvidia Optimus technology it only enables the graphics card when it detects something that needs it is running. Opening a Direct3D game switches it from the Intel chip to the nvidia chip, for whatever reason Minecraft doesn't trigger the switch.
1. You can either open a game that activates that switch then minimize it, Minecraft will now get a huge boost. or,
2. You can force the Nvidia chip to be used all the time by right clicking the desktop opening nvidia config and in the manage 3d settings category, select Nvidia [insert card name here] from a dropdown box instead of intel integrated blah blah blah or whatever it is by default. or,
3. ** This is the ideal way: you can add Minecraft to your list of programs that boot up the Nvidia card and set the default back to integrated, so you still get the battery saving capibilities the Optimus was intended for, and only use it when its needed.
++ Notch is now aware of this, he even retweeted someones link to that reddit thread. So I'd expect he'll do something about it.
Instructions for this are already in the Speed Guide sticky.
Oh ok. I just saw this retweeted by Notch and in the reddit thread there were a lot of people who didn't know about it, but now that they know it made a huge difference for them.
Especially as for a lot of people this didn't become a problem until 1.9pre. So it seemed like it might be helpful to have a link to this in the 1.9 sub-forum, which is where I put it, then it was moved. Oh well, hopefully someone who needs it sees it...
