I searched and didn't find anything on this particular subject- if it's been covered, I'd be much obliged if you'd link the thread.
Recently (shortly after the 1.8 update), I started having huuuuuuge lag issues in multiplayer. This is lag, not framerate. I log in, and I'll be falling through the sky for about 30-45 seconds, then sometimes I'll just die, and sometimes the world will start loading chunks extremely slowly, like one small chunk per 5-10 seconds. If I click on a chest, or try to manipulate anything, there's about a 30-45 second delay before it happens. After a couple minutes, it'll boot me off.
I doubt it's a server issue, because everyone else on the server logs in just fine and has no trouble. It does it whether I'm logging on externally, or through an internal network. My laptop is a pretty high-end gaming machine- SSD, core i7 processor, windows 7, 8 gigs ram, ati radeon 5730. It does it on wifi, 3g, or wired directly. I've tried re-downloading minecraft, forcing updates, reducing graphics, etc, to no avail.

Halp! What do you guys think?
It's probably the distance between you and server. He can log in perfect cuz he's at the location.
Check your firewall settings. Also, you wasted a lot of space giving specs for your computer after specifically stating it is lag, not framerate. You could also try doing some port forwarding to assist your router along, thought that will probably only help a little.

I just tried deactivating the firewall entirely, with no effect.
Try connecting with another computer if possible. Or pinging the IP through cmd.
Hmm, well, that's interesting...
I just tried logging onto a different server and I'm having no problems. *EDIT* Other servers are misbehaving in the same manner. It appears my computer is the one at fault.
Why would I have trouble joining my own server while other people can get on it just fine?
To clarify, the server is run off another laptop in my house, and my desktop at home gets on it just fine, as do people outside the network. I only have trouble getting on through this computer.
This is a problem many players seem to have with multiplayer. There is an old 25-page thread about it here, and the conclusion from it is that no one really has a clue what's going on.

Getting insane lag on multiplayer? Raise awareness. Post here.
My computer still won't connect properly to other servers. I tried a Hamachi server, and it did nothing. I also tried removing all game files by hand then reinstalling everything. If it never worked, it'd be one thing, but why would it suddenly quit working properly one day?

Ugh, frustrating.
Try getting optifine and messing around with the chunk loading options.
Also try lowering the render distance.

Since no one that's asking for help hits the +: If you see me helping someone, press the + for them! I'll do it for you too!

I've tried lowering the rendering distance to short, to no effect. I don't think it's a connection speed thing; I think it's more of a communications error between client and host.
I'm quite sure what you're describing is the mysterious lag issue I've linked to. As the wiki describes it:
Quote from Known Bugs section »
Some players have issues where they can send information to a server fine, but have large amounts of lag when receiving information from the server. This results in SMP being unplayable for players who experience this bug.
Maybe something random you'll do will fix it for you, maybe something random Notch will do will fix it in a future release. This issue is not hardware related and there is currently no sure-fire fix for it. Notch has been bugged and spammed and whatnot about it ever since it was introduced in beta 1.3 (this thread on getsatisfaction is only one out of many), but there was never an official response. In the meantime, everyone suffering from this can't play multiplayer.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right. :sad.gif: Sucks, because the whole point in playing to me is collaborating on projects with other players.

It does it if I'm on the local network- like directly connected to the router the server is connected to.
ping is 99ms at the moment.
