Before going into any think about "update your drivers hurr" I have played since 1.3 fine up until 1.8.1 where I can't open worlds & so I tried 1.9 & to my delight it loaded but:
Windows XP SP2
512MB RAM 32mb shared with onboard GPU
32MB SiS GPU
1.5ghz AMD Sempron CPU
I hate to say it, but for once I will suggest updating your computer. Whatever you were doing to get minecraft to run well on 512 mb must have been glorious and nerdy, but I don't think it will work anymore. I would suggest getting more memory and a better processor, that should fix up this problem damn near instantly
sorry if this wasn't an answer you wanted to hear :/
What video card do you have? How did you update it?

Go to Windows Update and get Service pack 3 (this should be a mandatory thing period, regardless of minecraft)
I'm poking around for any other 'alternative' options to get this resolved, as well.
And just to be clear, you say you 'updated via driver download', what does that mean, exactly?

I downloaded the driver as a .zip, extracted it into a folder & ran it. I had quite a bit of trouble because I removed it by mistake. It is updated though.
A strange thing is that Halo looks a lot sharper, like it has Anti Aliasing.
If there is a better way of updating the driver please tell me.

Try getting Java 7 32bit
Go to Windows Update and get Service pack 3 (this should be a mandatory thing period, regardless of minecraft)

A strange thing is that Halo looks a lot sharper, like it has Anti Aliasing.
If there is a better way of updating the driver please tell me.

I know what I'm doing. I plan ahead, or get tired and screw up everything.
Also, I remember this worked for some people. You're welcome to try it.
