I have my own server. It is Vanilla and my friend could connect just fine in 1.7. But since 1.8 kicked in, she can't seem to connect in it.
It says: Failed to connect to the server. Connection timed out: connect
My Ports are Fowarded just fine. I even redid it 2 times.
Now, I do believe the problem is on MY end. She can connect to other 1.8 servers just fine. I don't know what to do. I did try to do an entire new server with the new Server client, 2 times. Didn't work at all.

+ What OS?
+ Check that all versions match, including the server
+ Check Java versions
+ Are you able to ping each other? Is your friend able to ping the server ip?
perhaps you mistakenly put two things on the same port and now only the localhost (you) can connect, sorry but im not familiar with this issue. Hope you do get some help, otherwise make sure your ipv4 ? i believe hasnt changed which could mess it up, just look on youtube im sure there is a tut out there somewhere.

+Windows 7
+All versions match.
+Java 6 update 26.
+We can ping eachother just fine.
My brother and I are currently having the same problem. We dont know how to fix it but in the mean time we are using a program called Tunngle (http://www.tunngle.net/index.php?l=en). It creates a virtual lan regardless of where we are so you just join the same chatroom and then type in the new ip listed at the bottom. Good luck!
im not sure, but it does sound like a portforwarding problem, go to whatsmyip.org port scanner and see if the port is working as it should, check the port is forwarded to the correct IPv4 address.
At first, It said the Port was closed. I tried to reopen it. Then it said that it was timed out. What do I do?
Try searching port forwarding directions for your particular router, through that process you may find you either miss something a port has changed do to either a mistake or for whatever reason the port being reset.
