chill out on the mojang thrashing.
the game is fine, it's our graphics cards that aren't right.
if you want to rage at anyone, rage at apple for not updating the intel GMA graphics card drivers for older OSes as soon as a newer OS comes out.
i have an '08 macbook running leopard 10.5.8 with an intel GMA x3100 card, which runs up to openGL 1.2.
and i'm fairly certain that most of the rest of you are in the the exact same or very similar boat.
the only solution on our end is to upgrade the OS to one with graphics drivers that support openGL 1.5 or newer.
otherwise, we can only hope for an optional graphics downgrade patch from mojang or some magical mod that does the same thing.
I think a clarification needs to be made on people raging about this issue.
This is an Apple problem, not a Mojang problem.
The issue is that Mac OSX 10.5.8 (or lower) does not have proper OpenGL support on Intel Graphics cards. Apple designs the drivers, and does not provide the proper support. Intel Chip + OSX 10.5 = OpenGL 1.2. It needs at least 1.3.
On the flip side, the SAME harder (Intel Chip) + Windows works fine, because for windows, Intel provides the Intel Drivers. Furthermore, Some people have OSX 10.5 working. This is because they have an actual video card from nVidia or ATI that has MUCH better driver support. Not fantastic, but better. However a LOT of macs of the 10.5 era use Intel Graphics
The issue is that Mojang upgraded the games specs... To something that is for the most part conventionally supported.
If you want to be angry, be angry at Apple. They need to modify 10.5 to support OpenGL 1.3 or better, like everyone else already does (they wont, since its an old OS), or... Upgrade to 10.6.

If, anyone recalls Beta 1.3, and how Beta 1.3_01 fIxed the crashing problems on macs, then I think a update for us mac users should be out soon, but i just read jeb's twitter and it said he was working on armor, so I think we can get a little mad because Mojang isn't soley working on fixing our problems.
I have a new Mac Air w/Lion and it works just fine- both 1.7.3 and 1.8. However, with 1.8 the poor little thing works it's ass off. The fan comes on strong (it had never turned on before no matter what I was doing... including running 1.7.3) and my Air gets pretty hot.
I was worried about the heat on my new computer, so I went back to my "old" (about a year old) Windows laptop. It has updated Java, 4 gigs ram, 1 gig video card, Win 7 64 bit. It ran 1.7.3 without any problems at all for hours at a time (though the fan did come on and it got just a little warm). With 1.8 I can play for a few minutes and all of a sudden the "Saving Chunks" window shows up and it locks up solid. Once Windows had to reboot itself. Once I also got a blue screen warning something about "too many files" or "hard disk full"... but it flashed by so quick I couldn't read it before it bombed.
Bottom line is I think there's two problems:
1) A huge memory leak. To be honest I didn't play 1.8 on the mac log enough (more than 15 minutes) for it to bomb, but I have no doubt that it isn't a OS or computer problem. The only thing that has changed on either computer is the upgrade. 1.7 ran fine on both machines- 1.8 doesn't.
2) It's gotten too graphics/CPU intensive. Yea, we all wanted all those cool effects and enhancements but now we're paying for it. 1.8 makes my Air run hot- 1.7 didn't.
Sigh. I waited for the "real' 1.8 to come out, so I guess I'll wait for the inevitable patch to fix the memory leak/bombing. Sigh.
I understand your frustration, I have the same issue. But you paid for the game in the state you bought it in. You aren't legally entitled to the updates. So though it sucks, it is entirely fair.
Actually, I'm pretty sure when I bought minecraft (I'm pretty sure), it said that every beta update would be free. Paying 30$ for a new OS is not free, even though it is not directly related. I'm giving in and getting snow leopard over the weekend, but I'm still angry at mojang for breaking their promise. You know, I relly hope they DID say those updates were going to be free, because if not I probably look like a complete idiot right now.
the dispute about windows and mac is stupid + i am running a windows xp and this problem happens to me too so this means it is not the type of computer but how old it is. or maybe a graphics card thing? or memory try deleting stuff?
I have OS X 10.5.8 and nothing -.- Also tried java... and force update... TIme to burn down mojang . *sigh*

Yeah but how long will it be till 1.9? 1.8 took forever to come out!
$30 For a mac?
Zombiecraft Maps!
Still not fixed 105% cpu in lion with 8 gigs of ram and default settings for 1.0
This is an old post, 1.8.1 is no longer the minecraft release. Also, which version of the mac os?
