You did not back up your minecraft.jar before you updated?
Also for those complaining about mac support, 1.8 just came out like an hour ago there is still going to be bugs, I mean for god sakes its really only 1 man working on it at the moment and that is jeb.
Also for those saying you bought it therefore it should work... No, not how it works. You bought a beta with the knowledge that at somepoint something would ****up, now grow up.
they had 2 pre-releases and an official release and it hasn't been mentioned? yeah bugs not the whole game not working in the slightest!?
i did this because i was getting black screen so it might help you.
Firstly move minecraft to applications, show package contents, click on info.plist and scroll to the bottom, there will be 1.5+ somewhere, change it to 1.6+ and SAVE
Now go to MacintoshHD>System>Library>Frameworks>JavaVM>Resources>MacOS> COPY JavaApplicationStub
Show Contents on minecraft again, open folder MacOS, paste JavaApplicationStub into MacOS

Black screens should go away.
had to do that to get mods to work so yeah i have literally gone through every possible problem my computer could have and only thing left is minecraft itself

i'm mostly positive this is an openGL problem, not a java or processing problem.
apple hasn't given a leopard update for the intel GMA integrated graphics cards in years, which includes several upgrades of openGL.
the only solution on the user's end would be to upgrade to a newer OS with those openGL upgrades, but i'm really hoping mojang figures something out for us.
I can't even download 1.8. I get a error when it tried to connect to download it. I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and I've literally had my laptop for less than a month, its a brand new MacBook Pro. I seriously just want to be able to update and play :smile.gif:. Any help would be great.
I'm having the same problem as all the other Mac 10.5.8 users. I heard something about editing or adding some .class files in the minecraft.jar file to change the MainClass attribute (which, I think, is the problem), but I'm not java-savvy, so I don't know how to do that. If that's not the problem it's probably just Mac's compilation of Java, which is pretty much useless for anything made in the last 5 years. I'd say just find a copy of 1.7.3 until Mojang works this out, and if they don't, we'll have to upgrade our OS's.
Interestingly, if you start a world in 1.8 and play it on 1.7.3 it runs finely. New chunks will always mess up because they're not 1.8-generated, but if you want a preview of the update, that's your best bet. (Structures don't spawn either because they're not natural to 1.7.3's code, but you can still find things like basic rivers and ravines.)
Hey, I've been getting this problem too, here;s my error report:

My friend is also having this problem, gets a black screen with a white/error flash during game loading.
i paid for a game that actually works not for one that is totally unplayable, its been 3 updates and a couple of months and all they have managed to do is pretty much break the game
As frustrated as I am about this same issue...
Did you not read when you purchased? You paid for Beta if you paid. I paid right after 1.5_01, and I've put up with bugs. Why? Because I understand that I have Beta and not the full version.
If you're going to complain about paying for something that works, maybe you shouldn't have bought Beta and had the patience to wait for the full version.
As the latest Java for Leopard is the same as for Lion (1.6.0_26), There must be something else add to the game. Please give some very basic specs you failed to mention so far:
- computer modell (most important processor type)
- which Java versions show up in Java Preferences (in Application/Utilities)?
- what does 'java -version' put out in terminal?
To make a fresh start with the latest available Java on 10.5.8, delete every folder in /System/Library/Frameworks beginning with 'Java' and both 'Java' folders in /System/Library/ and /Library/. Install Java Update 10 afterwards.
-Macbook (Macbook2,1); Intel Core 2 Duo processors.
-Java SE 6 (64-bit)
J2SE 5.0 (32-bit)
J2SE 5.0 (64-bit)
J2SE 1.4.2's there too, but I have it unchecked because it doesn't get updated anymore.
-java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03-384-9M3425)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02-384, mixed mode)
It could be my graphics card (Intel GMA 950). I know I can't run anything on Steam because the default card on Macbooks sucks, so if the graphical updates in 1.8 are too much for the card, minecraft won't run either.
There you have it, Java is at 1.5 which is the latest supported version on the original Core Duo architecture. To use Java 1.6 you have to have a Core 2 Duo in your machine.
That doesn't make sense, because I have a MacBook with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
Yes it does, as Java 6 is supported on your machine but Minecraft does not use it. What does Java Preferences tell you?
I tried setting Java 6 as preferred in Java Preferences, but I got almost the exact same error message:

I think the other guy is right, I think it's a problem with Open GL. Some of our graphics cards (Such as my GMA X3100) only support OpenGL 1.2 when using OS 10.5.8 (Source)
So right now the only option is to replace our graphics cards?
Not exactly, if you check here and click on "10.6.8", you'll see that almost all of the graphics cards will support a higher version of OpenGL. Upgrading to OS 10.6 only costs $29 on the Apple website
Yeah, that pretty much nails it. So go and get your copy of Snow Leopard. It's worth it anyhow.
I never had bothered to before, and now that I see it's only $29 with free shipping on the Apple website, I'm going to order myself a copy, it'd definitely be worth it for more than just minecraft

lucky!! that's my final option but i would rather mojang just fix their **** than me having to buy newer OS to run a game that used to run perfectly
yeah snow leopard is 10.6 and that would make minecraft work hopefully, let alone the fact that there are a crazy amount of bugs in game to
This didn't work.
works for mods that get black screens, pity it doesn't do the same for 1.8
