I have purchased the game and it will not run when launched. It will not autoload the game files due to an inability to connect with the minecraft server. When I download either of the minecraft executables from the site I get the initial splash screen with this line of HTML at the top: <html><body>
<center>Failed to update news java.net.SocketException: Network is down: connect</center></body></html>
The network is not down. Please do not simply suggest I try again later as it will not matter how often I try nor when.
If I play through my browser (Firefox) the site installs the files and I can play. When I try and run the game normally again, it gives me the same message. When I try and log on through the splash screen it gives me an error that I cannot connect. I can play off line and play single player with no issues. The problem lies with connecting to the minecraft server it would appear.
I am playing on an XP machine. Java is updated, I have tried turning off my firewall. Still, nothing helps. I have read many of the current posts on what appears to be a similar problem and no proposed solution has worked. This is rather frustrating. The fact that I can play through my browser makes it easier to tollerate but I would really like to be able to play through the minecraft server like most people.
the only server minecraft it self has is the one that tells if you are paid or not , the servers you connect to to play multi is private owned servers. you have to join a server( find one in the forums and apply to be on it)
Furball...the server as in the minecraft game download/update/news server. The one that the game connects to when you start it up. The one that updates your game automatically. That is the "server" I am referring to in my post.
Alright, so I have had this problem as well recently.
What's happening is that your computer is running a higher version of Java than Minecraft accepts. So here's how I fixed it.
1. Uninstall Java. Make sure that all browsers are closed. If you're the administrator of your system, go to your program list* and uninstall all Java** things apart from Java DB 10.2.4.1 (or similar). I don't know exactly what this does, so it's not good to mess with it. All other JDK, runtime etc. are okay to remove.
2. Go to Minecraft.net and click Single player under Play Minecraft Classic. If the game does not load on Internet Explorer or Firefox, then you've done step 1 right.
3. Below the play window, you will see "This game requires Java. Press escape to release the mouse." Click on the word Java, as this will lead you to the file for Minecraft's current Java version.
4. Download and install the Java runtime package for your system.
5. After it is setup, try running the Minecraft executable again.
6. Make sure to stop auto-updates for Java. If you ever have to run a application that requires a higher Java version, update, but then downgrade using these steps again.
If this does not work
Try finding a blank executable from 2010. This version does not include the splash screen. It will still update and play fine, however. I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a shot.
*The program list can be found in the Control Panel, under Add or Remove Program, or Uninstall a Program (Vista). You must have administrative rights to access this.
**You cannot simply reinstall a older version of Java, as it will not work.
