I'm playing on a pc with a slightly older processor/nvidia card combo, i have no problem playing day long sessions of most games (i spent 8 hours in Amnesia and HoN last weekend) but when i play minecraft it will lock within 5 minutes of me entering a server and the processor usage will be maxed out. The lock is unrecoverable and i have to power off reboot.
I've stress tested my pc and all my drivers are up to date (even tried old versions), i can play for hours in games more demanding than Minecraft with no problems so i'm a bit frustrated, on the lowest settings(which i far exceed) i still hit 40fps and there doesnt seem to be any problem... till it locks with no warning.
Been noticing this phenomenon more where people who hold standards that above average are silenced while those with standards lower than average are viewed as pleasant and preferable. No wonder mass media is in such ****.
Minecraft is more taxing than you think, especially with big worlds. When I'm travelling around between different locations quickly in my large world the java process can eat up 1.3GB of memory...thats the same as Halo 2 / Assassins Creed 2 / GTA 4
Of course whether it's supposed to use that much memory is another issue.
