So I had been playing my favorite world for maybe an hour or so. I didn't have any lag or other problems, and my computer wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, but it suddenly shut down. I believe it overheated, because it restarted without any problems, didn't bring up system restore or anything. When I re-opened Minecraft, the world I had been playing wasn't in the menu. I checked AppData and the folder was completely gone.
I tried several search terms, but couldn't find a topic like this in the forums, so I hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm using Vista and as far as I know the Java is up to date and everything. It may not be recoverable, but I'm so confused as I've read about worlds being corrupted, but not zapped out of existence completely :<
**EDIT: I forgot to mention, in AppData there were 3 or 4 folders of test worlds I made a few weeks ago when looking for seeds, but I had deleted all of them pretty much right away, and they hadn't been in the world menu at all...???
If you still have the seed you should try generating it again or just generating a world again and it might just be the same world (this happened to my sister once).
Well, I loaded the seed again, since it was one I made ('therizinosaurus') and found my previous spawn point. Everything generated mostly the same I guess, except there is now water in my old hidey-hole for some reason. Same pumpkin patch, same caves and everything..
I don't get it, though. If it reverted to a previous state, then why were all my very recent (as of this week) changes to other saves still intact? the world that vanished is one of the earlier ones I made, probably during 1.4.
If there's no way to recover it (I've never had this happen before, am fairly new and have no idea) then I guess I will just INVedit some crap and try to make some better bases in this world... the only thing I'm really upset about is a couple of huge cave systems that I spent a long time remodeling. Ughh.
Eh, it's not like I built a bunch of awesome structures. I was mainly keeping a few bases around cave systems and just building up resources. Still annoying, but I can start over and make better stuff in a totally awesome world, I guess.
It sounds like you have a case of multiple corrupted maps getting confused with eachother by using the same name.
If you want, you can zip them up and post all of them on my sig, and I'll see what I can sort out.

Did your world disappear from minecraft? Is it corrupt? Lags? Can't move? "Saving Chunks" Crash? Crashes when you open chests? It can be saved!

Since I tried starting a new map of the same seed, would that screw it up? I copied a backup of all the saves, including everything that was in the save folder when I restarted-- so some of the folders in there are the worlds I deleted and thought were totally gone.
Also just to note, i opened up 3 or 4 other worlds that I regularly play, and they worked normally and seemed to be in the state I last left them.
The seed still works as the same seed, but with weird random differences, like a waterfall and small cavern on the side of my home mountain is no longer there. I guess the world generation somehow changed, because this world was started on 1.4, I believe.
