So, when I first got set up, I had the common JVM error, and using the .bat file trick, I was able to beat it. Then I downloaded 1.4 beta, and the problem returned. To my surprise, however, the .bat file trick no longer worked for me!
I have tried the following:
-Reinstalling Minecraft by removing my old .minecraft folder, re-downloading, and then re-adding my saves.
-Using the .bat trick (which beat it before, but not now).
-Uninstalling all Java versions, and reinstalling 6.24, as well as the accompanied JDK.
-Scanning my computer for malware, as I heard that this too can impact the JVM.
I am currently able to access both single-player and multiplayer through the website, but the standalone is still non-functioning.
Hence, all of this leading to my thread title, I need a new way to beat the JVM error, as none of the old methods that I've seen on other forums, youtube, etc. seem to work on my particular strain of this malady befalling the game.
Double click your .bat file and press the "Print Screen" (may be abbreviated in a manner such as "Prnt Scrn") key in the upper right hand section of your keyboard once the command prompt has shown all it's text. Then open Microsoft Paint, and paste the screenshot you took on to paint. Look at the fourth line of the Command prompt, if it says "Could not reserve enough space for object heap", not enough RAM was available when you attempted to use your .bat, and so nothing was done.
An easier way than the above to check the output of the command prompt is to add "pause" (without quotes) on its own line in the bat file before you run it.

Being more specific (by posting what the error actually says) would be helpful.
