I can get the server running and log on to it from the laptop, but when I try to connect to it from my desktop it tells me connection refused. After hours and hours spent on the phone with my internet company and my router company, the final conclusion is my router needs replaced (I can barely stay online with it now, after all the screwing with it).
My question is.... Is it possible to plug an Ethernet cord from my computer to his and run the server program and play together? And if so, please for the love of God, give me clear, simple, mostly retard-proof directions.
am in the same boat, I have screwed w/ my router so much now that it hardly runs internet. A bit annoyed. After trying everything, I may buy a new router too. Sadly mine is a 150 dollar router and its only a year old. Really makes me just not want to play Minecraft instead. :sad.gif: It's sad but I don't have another solution (I made a thread about this, waiting for a reply as well)
I'm sorry about your router, but at the same time it's nice to know I'm not the only one having this problem. I'm going to buy a new router, but not until April.
You do not need a new router, whoever told you that needs to be fired. Worst case you need to reset it to factory defaults to undo whatever nonsense they had to do to your router that has caused it to act up.
If you are playing on the same network you shouldn't even need to forward ports, that is only for external traffic coming in. All you should have to do is run the server on one machine, figure out what it's internal IP address (probably 192.168.1.xxx, go to command prompt and type ipconfig) and connect to that IP address on the other computer.
Obviously you both need to have your own accounts to be able to authenticate against the Minecraft.net servers first, but running on a LAN shouldn't need anything done to your router.
What Vardoj said, you shouldn't need to forward any ports for a lan game. You might need to open port 25565 in the laptops firewall, thats the typical cause of the error "connection refused."
Sometimes just unplugging a router for 15 seconds and plugging it back in can straighten out weird issues with connectivity.

actually I tried this because I was setting up a server but it doesn't work so try downloading hamichi. It basiclly does all the port forwarding for you but doesn't mess with your router settings so I suggest getting that
End Goal: To play SMP with my husband in our living room from his laptop and my desktop.
I followed the instructions on http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutor ... p_a_server including going to portforward and doing all that.

OH! We both have Vista and McAfee.

I reset my router to factory settings, then did the ipconfig to get my IP, and we both can connect. /dances for joy
x1 million
Thank you soooo much!
