Saves Disappear from World List
You were playing minecraft, something unexpected happened which forced the client to close, and when you tried to start playing again, minecraft no longer recognized your world. This can also happen to the level if an SMP server stops unexpectedly.
Rarity: [] [] [] [] (extremely common)
Fixable: (extremely easy)
How to fix:
[*:33mvfr4w]Close MineCraft
[*:33mvfr4w]Open your saves folder. On windows, this folder is called:
%appdata%\.minecraft\saves
On mac, the folder is called
~/Application Support/minecraft/saves
[*:33mvfr4w]Find and open the file of the save that minecraft doesn't recognize.
[*:33mvfr4w]Find the file called 'level.dat' and rename it to 'corrupt.dat' (The file extension may not be shown, the file may appear as just 'level', in which case, rename it to 'corrupt')
[*:33mvfr4w]Find the file called 'level.dat_old' and rename it to 'level.dat'
[*:33mvfr4w]Reopen minecraft and try again. You have lost some items that were in your inventory.
How To Find Save Files or Minecraft Program Files
You need to find your save files so you can do back them up, share them, fix them etc..., or you need to find minecraft's program files and install a mod, back them up, delete them, etc...
Usefulness: (extremely useful)
Doability: (extremely easy)
Procedure:
[*:33mvfr4w]Close MineCraft (you shouldn't do anything with any of these files, including your saves, while minecraft is running)
[*:33mvfr4w]If you do not use windows, skip this step.
The minecraft data folder can be found at the following location. Copy and paste it into the address bar of any folder window to go directly to the minecraft data folder.
%appdata%\.minecraft
The variable %appdata% denotes a special system folder where a user's applications can store data. Save data is stored in the folder called 'saves', and the minecraft program files are stored in the folder called 'bin'.
[*:33mvfr4w]If you do not use mac, skip this step.
The minecraft save data is stored in a folder in your application support folder. Navigate to the following folder to access them.
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
The ~ in the folder name is a special folder built into the system denoting your home directory, and is usually equivalent to '/users/<yourusername>'. Save data is stored in a folder called 'saves', and minecraft's program data is stored in a folder called 'bin'.
[*:33mvfr4w]If you do not use linux, skip this step.
***Linux instructions go here***
[*:33mvfr4w]If you do not host an SMP server, skip this step.
most SMP servers use their own internal libraries to run minecraft, and do not rely on external program files like those in minecraft's 'bin' folder. The saved level for an SMP server is usually within the folder from which the server is running, and is specified through the server configuration.
[*:33mvfr4w]if you do not use any sort of special launching conditions for your installation, skip this step.
Minecraft can be tricked into saving data almost anywhere by changing the values of the special variables it uses to find the save and data folders. If you use any special settings when launching, keep those in mind when searching for the minecraft's folder.

If none of those work, try disabling your antivirus software, as certain antivirus products have been known to cause extreme lag.
If neither of those work, then you'll need to use a different network card. If you have both wired and wireless connections, then try using whichever one you aren't currently using. If you don't, or that doesn't work, then unfortunately you'll need to buy one and install it, and hope it's one of the ones that works with Minecraft.
Ah, I dont know if this is a regular problem, but i cant run minecraft. When i download the first program on the lists at the downloads page for windows at http://www.minecraft.net it ask me if i want to open it (not run it?) and then asks which program i want to use to open it with. i dont want to open it, i want to run it! when i download the second program for windows on the downloads page it, minecraft.exe, installs fine, i save it to my desktop, but when i try to run it, it says that "the publisher could not be verified, are you sure you want to run this software?" when you click run the box closes down and nothing happens? i really dont know what to do...

Bump because this is a relatively important thread and is getting pushed off the first page by "Minecraft server error!" "Game keeps crashing!" "Black screen!" "SocketException error!" "How do I port-forward?" "How do I port-forward too?" "Problem connecting!" etc...
OHMYGOSH i hope you dont ignore me after hours of googling crap... i cant fix this.
for some reason, half the time (or more) i run minecraft, it works perfectly for a while. then, the right mouse thingy stops working. this sucks. especially at night, or while mining; i cant plug accidental water leaks, make steps (if i fall im stuck for good), put down doors, or even torches. i also cant even use my workbench, furnace, or storage chest. i cant get into a boat, or a minecart. most of the time, this problem starts as soon as i run the game. i also cant get wool from sheep, or even hurt pigs to get meat. i cant get milk from cows, either. i know im clicking all the rigth buttons, and even if im wrong, i try both. NOTHINGS WORKING!!!!! someone help; this makes minecraft impossible to play. ive tried playing on the browser (NOT smp) and using the download. if its lag, which is probably it, how can i stop it?
Oh hey, the mindless unrelated support posts are bumping the thread for us!
Oh, and the first thing you should try is removing all mods, by deleting minecraft.jar, so the game will download a normal unmodded one.

well, first of all, you get wool from sheep by punching them, not right clicking. There is a mod that makes it so you can get wool by right clicking, are you by any chance using this mod? also, not everything is caused by lag. lag, also called latency, is a very specific problem that arises from the fact that signals from far away servers take longer to get to clients, and therefore there seems to be a delay between when you do something and when it actually happens.
i'd start by doing a force update. if you have any mods installed, this will remove them. If the problem goes away, and reinstalling the mod causes the problem to return, it is the mod's fault, stop using it. Perhaps you need to make sure the version of the mod you are using is compatible with the current version of minecraft.
if you aren't using mods, force updating will repair the game files if they are broken somehow (this does seem to happen a lot)
if you still have a copy of the old launcher, you might give that a shot.
To everyone experiencing a black screen of death
The black screen of death is minecraft's most common failure mode and is caused by a large number of different issues. In order to fix your problem, we need more information than just 'it blackscreened'. We need to know when it blackscreened (how far it gets before crashing - can you login? does it try to load/update? was it ingame? does it simply not ever start?), your version of java, your operating system, and an overview of your hardware. We can't troubleshoot in the dark.
Minecraft seems lately to be having lots of issues with blackscreening for no apparent reason on macs. I have no idea why, and I don't own a mac, so I am of only limited use here. My roommate has one but it seems to run minecraft fine.
Blackscreens sometimes happen randomly in game. Lots of games sometimes crash. It's not really a big deal if it happens randomly here and there, and there probably isn't anything wrong with it either.
bump for justice. still need help too. Also, I am now frequently on the IRC (check the irc board for the address). I don't go by this username, but I do offer live support.

if you aren't using mods, force updating will repair the game files if they are broken somehow (this does seem to happen a lot)
if you still have a copy of the old launcher, you might give that a shot.
