I think 1024 is the largest I can set it to, and that still errors. I don't know if it's trying to load all the inodes into memory first. In which case it's gonna fail no matter how much ram I give it.
I realize how frustrated you are and don't want to add to it but I had the same java/RAM issue and found that using the setting between 1024 and 2048 (1536) was accepted w/o error. Anything else that wasn't 1024 popped an error. Don't know if that will help but there it is.
