What makes me irritated the fact that he should be running a formal business by now instead of what stills seems to be something run by a rag tag team of developers in an office space. I know nothing about servers but this obviously isn't working, and you would think he would state why it's always going down instead of just a, "sorry for the downtime".
Also I am glad he was nominated for crap at the GDC, but it seems like he abandoned minecraft and just took off to his conference. I hope he wasn't nominated for outstanding up time or reliable customer/client support. I hope he is at the conference and he decides to show off his multiplayer game mode and realizes it isn't working.
Trolls like this actually are kinda funny. Wish more trolls were like this.
Franky, I'm sick of the downtime too. I can't even log into my own server, but if I put it into offline mode, I'm all too aware of the trolls like would flood my server and exploit it. It has happened only once, the last time I DID put it offline mode.
guys sorry, but shut the hell up. minecraft is in BETA. AKA NOT ****ING PERFECT. just wait and stop complaining. if this happens in the full version, then yea complain. right now, there is no point
"Minecraft is in BETA..."
THIS.
I have a few problems with this overly used statement.
1. Beta games usually do NOT cost anything. They are free-to-play until they go to live productions. This is always the case in closed beta and almost always the case in open beta. Taking money = providing a service. I understand it's beta, but don't take my money. I'd gladly test this beta for free, and then pay $50 for the game when out of beta.
2. Typically (sarcasm) BETA games are in beta so that you can log in, play the game, report crashes, bugs, exploits, problems, and of course make suggestions/support the beta game. GIven that the very basic fundamental problem is that we cannot even beta test the game, makes..... beta testing the beta nearly impossible.
3. The excuse "it's beta" doesn't negate the fact that this issue is ongoing, frustrating, and seems to never get a solid solution. Add to the fact that Notch has made a substantial ammount of money in Alpha/Beta would have us assume that throwing a bit more money at the problem (better talent, better equipment) is a totally feasible conclusion.
FURTHERMORE, I feel at this point stating the obvious "it's beta" is now considered a troll/flame. It serves no purpose, it's illogical, it solves nothing, and it stands to do nothing. So, GTFO out of the troll echo-chamber and find an original idea to leave with us here in the forums. Thanks.
NO ONE forced you (all of you complaining) to pay for the game at this stage or for that mater in any later stage either. If it is so bad that Mojang have your money, than ask to get it back and put down the game (Stop playing it).
There are NO ONE forcing you to play or pay. :wink.gif:
We have seen several times some one form the team at Mojang sitting all nights in the weekends to fix server issues to keep you all happy. Unfortunately this time the they went to GDC and have used several of the last hours traveling.
And way do you (all of you complaining) not starting making your own game that is much better, offering excellent community feedback and communication with NO problem at all. And if you can do that with out earning money to do all the server upgrades, hiring and paying for developers as you grow, than you really have done better than any body ever have.
EVERYBODY understand it is frustrating, even I had planed for some nice MineCrafting for the past hours together with friends. But instead chilled and used my time my own programming hobbies.
And YES there is no problem letting other know you are frustrated, but please be a bit less rude against people.
I find it hilarious how 90% of this thread is full of people who have no idea how a server is even run/hosted or even how saying "upgrade your server" would probably not fix this issue. The servers have been upgraded countless times into newer and better tier brackets. Each time they last only a few weeks until they begin to get overloaded as well.
The game sells 12,000 copies a day and growing larger each day. If even half of those try to log in each day, the by the end of one week you have 42 thousand additional people trying to log in with a single week! On top of that there is already the near 1.5 MILLION users who play the game on a regular base.
As for the whole, they are on vacation again argument.. wow you are a moron lol. Firstly it was only notch who went on a vacation over 2 weeks ago. The rest of the team continued working.
This time the trip is NOT a vacation. They are not going to the GDC for the hell of it.
Regarding the GDC "I’ve got a huge pile of meetings planned while I’m there, but I hope to be able to check out a bunch of talks, and get to check out what other people are doing.
We’ll have a small Minecraft booth at GDC,"
That doesn't sound like a vacation to me.
As for people saying you paid for it should be playable. It is playable just play offline simple.
I have been part of a good 30 beta's in the past which had online play. NOT ONE OF THEM KEPT SERVERS UP 24/7, Most only had several online hours a day. the rest it was the servers were taken offline.
and you are not buying beta, you are PRE-ORDERING minecraft.
Relax, give it time. They can't fix a server when they are on a plane.
If you want to complain call up amazon and complain that their hosting can't keep up :wink.gif:

Some people here are very rude and I think that is wrong.
But I do have to agree on the main issue. The Servers are down because it can't handle the amount of the requests. That has nothing to do with the Beta state the game is in. Simply spending more money on better hardware and more servers will do the job, and money doesn't seem to be the issue with Notch.
Haha yeah I made an edit so I don't look like too much of an idiot >_>

Remove the forced login at the start. That would reduce load by quite a bit. Bring up the login window once a user hits Multiplayer.
Allow SMP servers to hold on to information pertaining to it's users for a time period, say 24 hours. You need to reduce the calls to the minecraft servers as much as you can. Since I must be authed to get into Multiplayer anyway, why not let that stand? Why do you need to reauth everytime a user joins a server?
Skins should be a local resource not a server resource. Let the SMP server or the client hold the current skin rather than needing to request it. I have no doubt that some bright programmer can find a simple way to allow players to have their skins uploaded to the SMP server they are playing without needing to query the Minecraft servers all the time...
I wonder how much money notch feels he needs to get a realible server
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I read a statement earlier saying that the problem was piling everything up on one server instead of multiple. Maybe that's the problem?
And LordVe, what do you mean forced login? (I'm such a noob to minecraft) Do you mean login in general? If so, someone could just download a .minecraft folder off somewhere and start playing sp for free, eliminating the point of paying for Beta.

Their server- their rules. Perhaps you hit a piece of air that belonged to them?
They do that anyway even with the way it is set up now. In fact that is how I originally started playing minecraft. My friend gave me his copy to try out. To stop that is quite easy. Just make it so that the file that allows access to SSP is computer specific.
They still see themselves as the little company that could. You need more than a handful of people that design and maintain your games, websites, and databases. Hire some people ... seriously. Did the whole ****ing company fly to america?
Fact: your login servers should not go down for 12 hours because no one is available or willing to fix the problem. That should never happen. Let alone over several weeks. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.
This is not a beta issue. I accept that there are problems with the game that are not easily resolved. What I don't accept is that they just don't seem to be willing to spend money on equipment, improved design, and personnel. That has nothing to do with Minecraft the game. It is however reflective of the company itself and their willingness to support their products.
You should never be in a position where you are waiting for someone to wake up and address an issue. It's ridiculous. I am very concerned that this game will not properly be supported because they don't want to rise up to the level this game has brought them to.

I don't mean to be insulting but I think we all know what the problem is. European's aren't very good a running companies efficiently. I knew what I was getting into when I paid for the game in EUROS.

Common sense tells me that MAYBE, just maybe, they could look at their numbers and buy server upgrades appropriately. If they have the ****ing numbers right in front of their face, why not spend some of that $26 million in sales on servers that can handle the expansion? Why wait until the server ****ing dies? That seems irresponsible to me.
If I know I'm going to have more babies, I cook more damn food. I don't wait for one to starve to death before I expand my grocery list.
If upgrading the servers would fix this issue, then look at the numbers, estimate what you're going to need for this amount of time, and buy that. Sounds so simple. Maybe it isn't though.

They should step up and prepare for the increases they know will come. They should buy servers good enough to cope with the expected player increase well in advance..
