There are a few options, however, these are basically last ditch efforts.
1) Go find something called the DaRT (Disaster and Recovery Tools) for Windows 7. Basically, you burn it to a disc and boot off of it. It will take you into a menu where you can not only access the file system, but also reset (and enable, if necessary) any of the local accounts on the computer. Using this, you could potentially reenable and gain acccess to the local administrator account on the computer, which would allow you to copy the files you need.
OR
2) Rip out the hard drive and plug it into another computer, copy files over, take ownership of them, have a nice day.
I'm not on windows 7. I am running XP. Would this still work?

If it's a school computer I'm going out on a limb and guessing he has 0 admin privileges, student account will be quite limited, and the school will be very unamused that he's using their resources to play minecraft.
True, but I was able to delete Synchroneyes off of C:\ at school through the CMD without any admin privileges. :biggrin.gif:
Edit: Also, in response to yamgrenade:
THOSE BLOODY CUNNING BASTARDS!
Haha, cunning indeed. I just hope I can figure this out before June.....

There may also be a minecraft save backup utility posted somewhere on the mods forum that could give you the option of backing up your worlds to a different directory. I just did a quick skim there but didn't see any right away, though maybe someone else here could recommend one that doesn't require "explorer" access?
I also just realized another issue you may have to face; once you have backed up your saves (assuming you can eventually), how will you get them back onto the school computer? A conundrum for sure.
Hopefully one of those utilities does the trick and this becomes a non-issue for you. Sorry I couldn't help any more, I've not dealt with a locked down system since NT :sad.gif:

I won't really worry about it too much. A lot of the fun in minecraft is starting over.
Thanks for taking the time to help me though, I really appreciate it.
If your school's computer can boot from disk, you might be able to use a Linux distro on a live-CD to copy your files. Something like Puppy or Knoppix or the sort. If I recall, at least one of those is able to read FAT or NTFS file directory.
Using a search engine with the phrase "using linux boot cd to recover windows" should give a decent list of answers.
If you can't boot from CD, you may have to do some research on your computer's BIOS. It may be an option, provided it's not locked down too.
Anyhow, how did you get Minecraft installed without admin privilages?

Thanks. And I downloaded it from my desktop and put the .exe on the laptop.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried bypassing the security altogether by booting into safemode? You should even be able to get a command prompt from the startup menu.
You could also try Hiren's boot disk. It's a great collection of tools, one of them being MiniXP. It loads a stripped down copy of XP. From there you might be able to copy the world data to either a different location or to a flash drive. Do a google search for it. Shouldn't be terribly hard to find.

You can probably even find MiniXP without having to download Hiren's. I just usually have Hiren's on hand for particularly messed up computer jobs.
Plus you can just burn Hiren's to a cd. I don't know if the same can be said for just MiniXP, you might have to go through the hassle of making a bootable flash drive or some mess...
Safe mode is the best bet, I think the backup utils might be able to find the directory automatically [there's one I was using that just parks a .zip of the world wherever you want, I'll see if I can find it real quick].
Aha, MinecraftSavior's the one I was using [mentioned earlier with a link], it does auto-detect the save directory but I'm not sure how well that would work without admin privileges.

Yea, I tried MinecraftSavior but it gave me several error messages. I think I might just let this one go....the restrictions are too tough for a guy like me. I managed to kill smart sync, I hacked my friend an admin, I changed the admin password for my computer just for kicks and giggles, but they got me here....
He can't get to %appdata%, it's a permissions issue.
You're probably going to need to talk to your school's IT guys and try to get them to back it up for you. Bring a thumb drive in for them to put your saves on.
I doubt that they would respond kindly to this. I would prefer to keep that as a last resort.
I don't see why they wouldn't respond kindly to this.. All you have to say is "I have a saved file in a folder I can't access, could you copy it over to this flash drive for me?"
Unless you're not allowed to play games on your school computer, this shouldn't be a big deal :tongue.gif:
They would make me pay for the game again, for some ******** reason like that. And then they would re-image it.

Oh didn't see that. I'll give these a try.
Help to eradicate the evil floating jellyfish!
I can put the saves on my flash drive, the problem is accessing them.

Just tried the search....no results...
Most likely you put quotes in the search box, which may have reduced your number of results.
Yes I did....now I feel stupid...

Try starting in safe mode and see if that gives you access to cmd.

Open notepad > type Start
Save AS <whatever>.bat
This opens it for me every time
in it, You want APPDATA= "some path or something"
(Yes, APPDATA in all caps)
Else, try
else try
Note that if you don't want minecraft to save in %appdata% you can just use
a .bat file with
Minecraft.exe "C:\"
Where C:\ is the save location
