I don't have the greatest computer ever, so I'm guessing that that is what could be causing this issue. I run the game on tiny rendering distance and fast graphics, and I still have lag.
Anyway, lots of times, whenever I right click to place a block, I lag, and it places two blocks. This is EXTREMELY annoying, because I have to destroy the block that was placed on top of the one I wanted to place. Also, if I'm placing half-blocks, I end up losing half-blocks for no reason, since they combine to form one block, and you only get one back from destroying it.
Any help with this problem? It's making it really hard for me to play the game without getting frustrated.
I was hoping for a solution but all I've found so far is other complaints like yours and mine. It's not simply a computer issue or a mouse issue else I'd have the same problem in other games and programs which is not happening.
I have the graphics settings the same as yours to avoid lag while playing, and everything seems to be running really smoothly when this happens
I also find it tends to get worse the longer I play the game and it can happen when I have a half dozen other applications running or when I've stopped all other programs except Minecraft.
Since Minecraft won't run on my gaming computer, I have no way to determine if it really is my computer, but since it only happens in Minecraft I have to believe their is some kind of buffer check problem in the game.
I have the exact same problem, except it only started doing that to me in the last update. (but it could have done it before, I just stopped playing Minecraft for a few months so I wouldn't know) Also, I have a fairly decent computer so I don't think my computer or mouse is the problem.

I noticed that too.
I really hope this gets fixed soon as what should only take 2 days to build something almost takes 4 days.
same issue here, but mine was on a friends server. it seems to be a Java issue, as browsing the web or playing Alien Swarm isnt affected by it. and single player minecraft doesnt have the issue either
I have the exact same problem. For me, however, I think it's just a RAM problem. I found that going into my Task Manager, and ending the unnecessary processes that are using up a considerable amount of memory (such as Steam at times) assists in managing the issue. Also, I find the issue a lot less occurring when it is the only thing I have open (closing all programs, such as my web browser). Google Chrome seems to use up a lot of memory for me, at times, and closing it also helps when I'm playing.
I think this is a bug. I am experiencing this as well, on a 4-core i7 with 3Gb RAM with recent ATI 3D graphics running no other programs. I find it hard to believe it's specification related. I'm also playing single player, so lag should not come into it.
My solution is to reduce the size of the window in which Minecraft is running. At full screen or near full screen, the problem occurs. I'd say about 30% of the time I lay extra blocks. Reduce the window size to around 75% of the screen and the problem is immediately gone. I'm running latest Minecraft on Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit with the ATI proprietary driver. I'm using default graphics settings in the game.
Could other posters let me know if this helps them, and their OS?
Same issue. Mac OS X Lion, Java runtime 6.x. Cyborg RAT mouse. Tried on new install, and with optifine, issue persists. No problems outside of minecraft.
