So I recently created a multiplayer server for me and a group of friends. We had been playing on it for a couple of days when I somehow made a clone of a minecart when I tried to set 1 minecart on the tracks. My game froze but my friends stayed on the server. I thought if I quit and rejoined the server I would be able to join again. When i went to close the window it wouldn't close, so I forced quit it. I opened up minecraft again and it wouldn't let me log in or put the cursor in the textbox. I then thought it might work in a browser so I opened up Firefox and the minecraft website wouldn't load. I also tried safari and I tried restarting my mac in windows mode with bootcamp and then trying minecraft. Nothing is working and it is probably because I had my IP address in the game. Could someone pppppllllllllleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaassssseeeeee help! i NEED MY MiNECRAFT
These servers go down quite frequently. I hope they are working on a permanent solution to the bandwidth problem if that is the actual problem. For the amount of users registering (and paying), this should be setup on the proper servers. I realize we are still in Alpha, so I expect bugs. But not being able to play multiplayer (the whole reason I purchased) gets aggravating. This has been almost a daily occurrence since I purchased last week. Let's get this issue resolved once and for all.

Calm down! You bought a game in ALPHA version, you should be prepared for a bumpy road. Yes, I know you PAID for it and when you pay for something you want to be able to use it, but these crashes are sadly where Notch is in the production of the game. Like a poster above said, post in the forums, watch some youtubes of minecraft builds, plan out your next big thing to build in the game, and play some other sandbox game, like GTA or something. The website will be up before you know it.
Like I said, I paid $13 for this game. That's some decent coin for a game I can't play multiplayer. For the amount Notch has made on this, I'd be fixing this game. I put up with the plethora of bugs in multiplayer because it is in Alpha mode, servers being down this frequently is unacceptable in my mind. I work in this type of environment professionally and it shouldn't be this problematic to maintain a server. It's all about mind set. He has a good opportunity to develop a great game, and it would be foolish to be spending my time playing Civ V at a critical hour of this game development. My 2 cents have been said, I hope they *permanently* address this issue.
Agreed. With how much cash he has made off of people ordering the game, he should have plenty of monies to get a decent server with a decent connection that can actually handle the bandwidth/server load that is required.
With that said, maybe he is transferring to the new server now and that's why its not working.

Actually, you paid $13 - half-price, mind you - for a pre-order of the game, and access to Alpha builds when available. You could correctly feel justified in complaining if this were to be happening once Notch had announced that the game is in its final state which, you will notice, has not happened yet.

Au contraire, sir. A small connections add up quite quickly. That's the very basis of distributed denial-of-service attacks. As Notch has posted in his blog, he has been working on moving the infrastructure to a more scalable platform. Give him time.

If you had just spend the better part of a year working on one project nonstop, I would assert that you, too had earned a few days' rest. And Notch isn't exclusively resting, either- he's also working to make sure that people that have pre-purchased Minecraft get access to the downloadable version of the game (which is still playable when the auth server is down) as soon as possible, even when there are issues with the server, or with PayPal. All while also working to set up the company so that he will have more time to, yes, develop Minecraft.
people I know the server was down and all but even today, when it works, I downloaded the minecraft alpha and it doesn't work. I have an almost brand new computer, so I know it has good software and it matches the requirements to play the game. I have the latest version of Java, but the game still won't start up.(it works in a browser, but i like to make it fullscreen)
Whoever says to wait for the server to come back up is wrong. Even if the server was down, you could just play offline. If at the time playing offline, wasn't possible, I apologize. You might not be able to play on your friends server full screen, but it's better to play single player fullscreen and play SMP in a smaller screen than to play both in the browser version.
as he said, the minecraft.net server is down. wait for it to come back up.

This will help a lot... just put in minecraft.net to see if you not the only one.

One can hope.

Patience is a virtue, friend.
NOTa lie and who knew sound could cut woodThey paid good money for a game that does not yet fully exist. They paid money for access, when available, to development versions.
And guess what? When the site is down, you can still play the game. See the 'Play offline' button? Give it a try.
