How do I edit a map in Alpha?

I give up. I use the Minecraft.exe, how do I edit my save games so I could, for example, spawn useful rocks somewhere within reach? What sort of things would I need to download, and how do I use them for such a purpose?

There's something slightly more interesting on a link on the page you linked called the INVedit. Thank you very much, i'm sure this will do fine.
