If this does not work for you and you cannot get it to work, search on google for how to port forward for your type of router. Just remember to use the minecraft ports.
After trying to find an easy way to port forward and make a server, I discovered an element that made my life easier.
First of all, download the minecraft server stuff.
Download this program and you're one step closer to being awesome.
---------------------------
Once you've downloaded this program, install it and run it. You may be prompted for admin access if you're running vista. You should see something like this.
From the "Router" dropdown, select your router. It should be there, if it isn't try clicking "Tools > Update Database". If that doesn't work, you'll have to enter your router IP, Username and password manually. Normally the IP will be 192.168.0.1, the username "admin" and the password "password" or "admin".
So select your router...
And next right-click on the white space and click "Add new"
Click the "Custom" tab.
Now under name type whatever. I have "Mcrft".
Under type, set it to "TCP/UDP".
Now for the start port, type "25565" and the same for the end port.
The IP address should be auto-detected, and if it isn't, click the red icon next to it. Now click "Add".
Now click "update router", and a popup should come up and display what it's doing, whilst adding the new port to your router.
You're almost there...
Now click "Tools > Windows firewall port exceptions > add current ports list".
Under the port type "25565" and then make sure TCP is selected, and click "check port"
If all goes well:
Next check the UDP port and click Check and the same thing should be displayed. If you are presented with RED text, saying it is not open and is unreachable, you've done something wrong. Go back and make sure you've done it all right.
Next step is server config.
Go into your minecraft server folder and find the "server.properties" file. Open it with notepad and you should see:
Change "Verify-names=true" to "verify-names=false".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mod Edit: DO NOT CHANGE THIS TO FALSE UNLESS YOU CANNOT CONNECT TO YOUR SERVER AND HAVE EXHAUSTED OTHER POSSIBILITIES. SETTING THIS TO FALSE OPENS UP A VULNERABILITY FOR ACCOUNT STEALING.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leave the port.
Change the max players if you like.
Change the server name.
Change public to "false" if you don't want random people joining.
Change the motd (this is displayed when someone connects to the server).
And I dunno about the max connections so let someone else explain that to you xD
Save and close, now run "start server.bat".
Everything should load up A-OKAY. You're now ready to play with friends! But wait, one more thing you should know...
When you want someone else to join your server, give them the URL that is inside the text file "Externalurl".
This is how OTHER PEOPLE JOIN. YOU CANNOT JOIN WITH THIS URL.
"And I dunno about the max connections so let someone else explain that to you xD"
Max connection per ip. Usually a building only has one ip, so that ip represents a house, a LAN building, ect.
Oh, and how well does that program work with custom firmware (dd-wrt)?

I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort
I believe there are options for custom firmware, but in truth I do not know. The program is just a shortcut/easy way to port forward. You should be able to do it yourself.
the port-forwarding software apperently you have to purchase it is this true? you can download a demo but for full access you need to pay $15, did u do this or is there another way around this?
[EDIT] ok it is free but i cant find the download source, the link provided doesnt have a 'click here to download' option help me i only kno 5% about technical stuff lol
[edit] K i found it theres a link on the side that clearly reads 'download' my excuse is i drank last night and still hungover so :tongue.gif: anyways sorted now so ignore this :biggrin.gif:

i can't seem to use the program because it fails on setup 17 of the auto-editing. Seeing that it is unable to press the apply button because it freezes. Can someone tell me how to get around this or do it manually.
Ok i figured it all out now, its open at last :biggrin.gif:, recently my bthomehub was being gay and not allowin me to access internet so i conected to an unprotected source that was picked up and due to this i had that IP address rather than my own... so alas its sorted, however lol... Everything is as illustrated above, but its still sayin my server is down / unavailagle when i try connecting to it, what am i doing wrong here?
The url above where you say for ME to join use that url, i've put my IP address instead of that one, i also tried the gateway IP but that hasnt changed anything so.... Help! lol thanks for taking your time to help btw much appreciated.

OK, so I've done everything the tutorial said and I'm getting that my UDP port is "not open or not reachable". I haven't done anything wrong like the tutorial says because I followed it to the letter. I've got a Sagem Sky router and the only part it failed on in the update was the very last step which is pressing a second "apply" button, assuming this because I couldn't see one to press in the HTML window it shows next to the list of commands it's doing. TCP port checking comes back fine and when looking at the current port exceptions, it's showing 25565 UDP as open.
I hope these little niggles get sorted for Minecraft's official release because you shouldn't really have to fiddle like this to get it to work.

For YOU to join, connect with this url:

I've received several emails and gotten in contact with a few people on MSN, so far it's been successful for all of them.
Thanks for the positive feed back (via email)!

Post the IP it's forwarded to here, and post a screen shot of the Simple port Forwarding program.
Sometimes it forwards the wrong port, especially if you have Hamatchi installed.
