There's some weird bug that causes clients to run too fast. This in turn causes them to fill up the movement buffer on the server.
The buffer allows 20 seconds worth of lag currently..
I'm investigating the client source code (this is why there were so many point releases today), but it's not going too well.
I think I might have some helpful info on this, as I've been experiencing a variation of this problem since the first version of Minecraft. For me (at least) this problem is related to my Athlon 64-bit dual-core processor (but I'm only running 32bit Win). For some strange reason, when java.exe starts running, it seems like both CPU cores execute it simultaneously or something. This would result in anywhere from a mild 1.5x speed increase to about 50x increase, where I could cross the map in seconds! I would still be getting several hundred frames throughout all this. Also, I specifically mention Athlon because I don't have this problem on my Intel Core 2 Duo...
I originally solved this problem by going to the task manager, and manually setting the affinity on java.exe to just one CPU core. This would return everything to normal, even though I'd still risk being kicked/banned from servers, as it was automatically glitched when I joined. (one server op said his upstream maxed out at 1Mb when I joined glitched... I dunno what that means)
However, since the introduction of the frame-limiter, setting the CPU core affinity seems to have no effect at all that I can tell, and I soon find myself kicked for being a "cheater". On the good side, since the frame-limiter, I haven't seen anything greater than a 1.5x speed increase.
Hope this info helps.
P.S. I just preordered.... I hope all this "Cheating Detected" won't get my account banned or anything :-?
(edit: typos and such)
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF this is annoying. Really, really annoying. If I stay relatively still, I can avoid getting disconnected indefinitely, but this isn't a good solution.
Also, it seems as though everything happens a lot faster now (after the update) people move faster, I move faster, it takes less time for me to jump and land than before... Nobody else on my server has reported this as happening to them. I'm using an Intel Core 2 duo.
Unfortunatly its not fixed... atleast not for everyone...
While its probably better to wait for Notch to fix this - I solved it on my end with a simple little program - this program actually does NOTHING except enforce a sleep wait... but it should prevent the timer drifting, low framerate and reduce how often you get kicked for "too much lag"... and reduce how bad the fast/slow jerky movement is.

Aparently you have slow connections... dial-up slow...
Things that might help:
Don't download
Don't view other sites/pages
Don't use IRC
Don't use MSN/Yahoo!/AIM/ICQ
This might be some kind of prevention against speedhacks, though I cannot confirm this. (It would seem likely, speedhacks = increased m/s Ping)
I can confirm that:
It's true I was using cheat engine for the first time, I couldn't figure out any of the "hacks" people do, like no-clip or flying, but I was able to speed hack of course, putting it over 5 resulted in this. I don't bother to use CE anymore though.

I just bought the game too :<

This could just be me, but has anyone else with this bug noticed that the jump is much faster as well?
This is exactly my problem.
I move much faster, as if I WAS speedhacking, but I'm not and I don't know how to fix it

Use at your own risk, etc. - but I promise theres no trojan, viruses, etc. in the file I uploaded for whatever that is worth.
For a lot of us, it isn't fixed
It works fine for me!!! And I can state, that there truly are no trojans and stuff!
I still have the issue
Download Speadgear 6
May or may not work - java seems to be somehow messing with the system timer (which it should never ever do).
My program essentially heads off the deviations before they get too far - but it doesn't completely fix the problem.
