Hello there, I am looking to start a minecraft prison server, but the only issue is hosting. I don't want to go straight to dedicated hosting. I was looking to host on my custom pc until I can get a few people into it. Cause lets just say it's a complete fail, but I paid $25 in advance for hosting. There goes $25!
So my question is, does hosting this server from my own computer pose any threat to my computer, my wifi, my router, or any other computer in the house? I have heard that hackers can do their works with just knowing your ip. Is that true? Seems a little too easy to me. Also, can I game players have a better chance of hacking the server if I host it? Please, it would really help me out.
Also, what's a good free website to get a dynamic DNS ip?
"DDOS, short for Distributed Denial of Service, is a type of DOS attack where multiple compromised systems -- which are usually infected with a Trojan -- are used to target a single system causing a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Victims of a DDoS attack consist of both the end targeted system and all systems maliciously used and controlled by the hacker in the distributed attack." - source Webopedia
What is DOS?
"Short for denial-of-service attack, a type of attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic. Many DoS attacks, such as the Ping of Death and Teardrop attacks, exploit limitations in the TCP/IP protocols. For all known DoS attacks, there are software fixes that system administrators can install to limit the damage caused by the attacks. But, like viruses, new DoS attacks are constantly being dreamed up by hackers." - source Webopedia
1) DDoS (and DoS) attacks generally only happen if you manage to upset someone. The more people you let onto your server, and more importantly, the more people you have to disciplin or ban for whatever reasons, the more likely it is. I'd like to think the chances are pretty low, all in all. Random attacks just because someone found out your IP are extremely rare.
2) Anytime you have an open connection to the internet, even if it is a weird port restricted to minecraft, is an opportunity for someone to hack into it. That being said, doing so is hard, and again are very unlikely unless you managed to make yourself a target. If you are running a public server, chances you'll be a target, albeit a very low-interest one. Hackers are more likely to crash minecraft than they are actually do anything to your system, although in theory they could use up all your RAM and crash the system that way. I've heard of it being done, but never by reputable first hand reports.
3) Long story short, make sure you've got a good firewall and a good anti-virus, and a good router with updated security settings. Do all that, and you should be fine until you get crowds flocking to your server.
There is no super huge threat, other than DDoS which was already mentioned (not too high of a risk), but yes it is true that all a hacker needs is an IP, but that's not to worry about.

Wouldn't even have to be DDoS, could simply be DoS.
