I have built and setup a new server. It is currently running locally and is not internet facing as of yet. However, I am at a point where I must decide what I want to do.
Background details of the server:
This is an HP DL360 G6 dedicated server running dual intel XEON X5570 CPU's (for those not familiar this is two Quad core xeon cpu's with Hyper threading for a total of 16 Logical Cores and a clock speed of 2.93/3.33GHZ). This machine is currently running 16GB of DDR3 Buffered ECC ram, soon to be updated to 32GB.
The box currently has a two drive Raid 1+0 config with 146GB 10K SAS drives along with three additional drives that I have not configured yet.
The Box is currently running CentOS, however I have not decided If i want to switch to something different such as Arch, Ubuntu, Fedora, debian or even a Windows server variation(i'd rather not pay for this though).. I feel like I will probably stay with CentOS though.
My network speeds currently sit around 100-120 Download and 15-30 Upload.
Before making this network facing I need to harden the server, setup ddos prevention along with some sort of IPS/IDS, along with it being on a separate subnet as my home network. I also need to finish setting up port forwarding.
btw, If you couldn't tell, I am a Sys Admin/Network Engineer by trade.
My main concerns are how many people could I realistically support on this server(understanding my network upload speed is probably the main limitation with this build).
Next is type of server, do I want to run a White list, etc.
This will be my time hosting a MC Server and I am still in the researching process.
Minecraft it's self currently has 12GB allotted to it... Just because it can, even though it's overkill(isn't this whole thing overkill?).
For those that may be interested as well, My current Network setup could be considered a bit daunting by some. it goes something like this: Comcast router -> HP 48port Unmanaged switch(will be setting up as managed or switching it for a Cisco switch as i am more comfortable in Cisco IOS) -> Netgear NightHawk X6 router -> Multiple network devices(PS3, PS4, Desktop Computer(FX-8350, Radeon R9 270X, 24GB DDR3, etc), HP Server, laptops/macbooks, portable devices, Streaming devices, Crestron Home Automation controller, ETC.)
It depends on what you are using the whitelist for, if this is a server for just you and friends, it is a huge overkill if you are running a hermit craft style server, that should be able to handle it fine

This wouldn't be a private/personal server. Rather, A server to allow others to connect to.
