There are a lot of bad hosts out there, yet there are good ones. How do I find which one is better?
If you need information on what I want here it is. This is not a go find a server for me thread, suggestions would help. For example I don't know the difference between two servers that offer SSd and ddosd protection at the same price.
I plan on running a modded server, which needs some ram definitely. Its hard to tell which option is the best for even vanilla servers. Around 90 mods, no more than 100. Want at least 20 people capable of being on.
5 gigabytes is pretty expensive a month. (about 50 $.) Alternatively there are other service providers that offer 6 gb for less then 20$. What makes this server so special?
I've had them before. Pretty decent server even with 100 mods. Only issues I had is with world generation, and the fact they don't know how to install cauldron. 8gb for 20$
So far I just looked for most ram and cheapest. Since ram is very important on modded servers. Right now I plan to try and look through server specs. Some have sdd for premium and more expensive plans and others already have ssd included.
Don't get too hooked on RAM. Keep in mind that for Minecraft servers, especially modded ones, you'll want a powerful CPU that's not oversold. A lot of the super cheap hosts you listed will most likely be overselling their machines. Now, MCProHosting is actually pretty good from what I've heard, though their prices could be a bit lower for what they offer in my opinion. Your best bet would be to choose a well rounded host like myself. Make sure the customer support is good and same with performance.

I've decided to go with shockbyte Diamond plan. Also, 243 servers by them barely half are not suspended and most don't even have 1 player on. Have not seen a server with above 20 pop, so lots of extra Cpu power.
Well, the first thing you need to understand is a lot of hosts lie about what they provide. A lot are too small to have obligation to tell the truth, and with so many lying, newer ones that don't actually provide what they say see other hosts lying and do the same just to stay at the same level. That's something that happens a lot in the industry. You can always ask them to screenshot their specs directly from commands done in the servers. Smaller hosts would agree, larger ones probably wouldn't. You'd have to be connected to a higher support agent or a technical agent for that to happen though, larger hosts only have sales teams on live chat usually.
The ones you listed are very cheap, budget providers. To put it pretty simply, some expensive host's pricing is real life pricing. That's what you'd see in real life. Other cheap hosts are cheap simply to tailor to the industry and provide for those who don't have much money to spend.
A host charging $2/GB of RAM is definitely overselling or using poor hardware, likely both. You can't complain though, because you'd be using very cheap hosting and they need to make their profit somehow. Some people here host on Intel Atom or some processor from way back since I was born (a bit exaggerated). Can you blame them? Not really. When a client wants dirt cheap pricing, a host needs to sacrifice a lot to make it happen, and hardware is one place you sacrifice. Support team is another. Overselling is just one more of the many things they do to make their pricing more practical for them.
At the end of the day, you may be getting the 3GB RAM you're promised, right? But 8GB over at a cheap host isn't comparable to 3GB at a premium host. Don't worry, I'm not giving you a sales pitch here, but we do have some clients that are using low RAM packages with us and have been using (and asking for) high RAM packages, when their needs are much less. If you throw more RAM at Java, it's a misconception that it is actually going to be good for your server. You should use the amount you need. So a small vanilla server that works *OK* at 8GB elsewhere can probably be handled at 1GB at a more performance caring host.
So these expensive hosts, I wouldn't call them overpriced, personally I call them realistic. The dirt cheap hosts, well that's what I call them - dirt cheap.
Just to answer this, well, at least the server provider you mentioned saying they have HDD is being honest. I avoid naming any hosts, but a lot that say they use SSD are either not using SSDs at all, or using very poor, highly reused SSDs that aren't very good for R/W. The whole point of SSDs is higher R/W to do some file -> memory tasks faster, for example. A mechanical HDD which has better R/W speeds than a SSD is better, and HDDs were meant to have higher reliabilities (but in this time with SSD technology advanced, I doubt it makes too much difference, I don't hear of SSDs failing 24/7). HDDs are definitely cheaper than SSDs, and SSDs have less storage. "Unlimited SSD storage" with no logical fair usage policy and it being a dirt cheap host is a good indication that they're using either poor SSDs or actually using HDDs. But yeah, props for being honest. HDDs are cheaper so they keep cost down, and then they are able to deliver cheaper servers to you (the customer).
Best of luck finding the host for you. Very interesting question, and it's good that you asked.
Edit: Sorry for the essay Hope it helps though
Since support on your website is kind of, buried. What would most likely be the amount of ram needed for a large mudpack? Around 84 mods, something like the pack "Test pack please ignore." Would 3 gigs do it on your hardware or what? Please know I will take what you say to this lightly, since your kind of in the company :P.
I just would like to know this before I start comparing hosts again. I've learned a lot from this thread, so don't worry I'm no going to be so hell bent on ram.

Currently all servers run E3-1245v2 processors, 32GB of RAM, and 3x 120GB SSDs in RAID 5. Yes, we offer DDoS protection. Definitely no overselling. We only allocate a maximum of 28GB to each node, carefully monitoring CPU and storage usage as well. You can take a look at our System Status page. I must warn you that it's still under heavy development but it's at least in working order. https://status.advantageservers.com
I'm not too familiar with that modpack, but judging by the amount of mods you should be alright to start at 2-3GB. It also depends on how many players you plan to have online concurrently.

This server provider is a bit interesting. 7gb for around 20$. Why is this server better or worse than shockbyte? This has Hdd shockbyte has SSd.

Same specs means same performance. look for things like internet speeds, DDOS protection and how much ect.

That actually helped, thank you, I've made my choice of one of the servers that were listed

I have Bisect Hosting, I have no complaints.
Very well said! I don't disagree with a single ounce of what you said.

Funny, your own server company is hurt by what he said, just a little :p.
Not quite following you on that theory. Care to explain?

Nah, nvm.
About your servers. What are their specs? Do you offer ddosd protection? Do you oversell?
Anyway's, what would be a good amount of ram for a pack like this http://www.technicpack.net/modpack/tppi.552559
