I've been trying to find an alternate solution to VPN other than Hamachi since that went pay-only. I tried NeoRouter, but I can't get it to work and either no one seems to know how to get it to work or no one is looking at those threads. I use TeamViewer a lot for remote into my other computers, and I just discovered the other day that you can install a VPN driver as an added feature.
Does anyone know if TeamViewer's VPN feature will work with MC? Are there any additional programs you need to install? I read a while back that there was an IP locking program that some people used with Hamachi, or something like that. Is it as simple as using the IP that TeamViewer spits out? It wasn't for NeoRouter, apparently.
Speaking without experience using the TeamViewer VPN.. I believe any VPN should work as essentially what a VPN is, is extending your network over the internet. Where suddenly local IP addresses become accessible by the remote host. In that case, your friends would need to connect using your local IP address. e.g. 192.168.1.100. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Personally I'd always recommend port forwarding over VPN.
Breakthough: We turned off our firewalls for a test, and that allowed TeamViewer through, where it wasn't working previously. So TeamViewer is compatible with Minecraft, but one or both of out firewalls are blocking the VPN connection. What allowances do we need to add to our firewalls to allow MC via VPN?
When you guys are talking about port forwarding, are you talking about something outside your home or just the option available on your router? I've got several ports forwarded for MC according to the usual recommended settings of MC and NeoRouter. If you're talking about the option on one's router, I didn't know think that anyone could do anything to prevent that if their systems were linked before your router.
And thanks for the recommendation, but I don't want to add any new programs since we know that we have at least one viable option. We got it working with our firewalls up, but I'm not sure which setting fixed it, and I don't know whether it will work in the opposite direction (he opend his game to LAN).
Also, I discovered that his game wasn't using port 25565, and that may have been a large part of the issue if not the entire thing. Where do you set up MC's default port in LAN games, or is that only changeable in a server?
Anyone know what the typical firewall settings are that might have been the issue? I changed a bunch of things in both our firewalls (one was that I noticed MC was not included as an exempted app), so a gain, I'm not sure which one actually did the trick. To ensure it works the other way, I may need to check what you all reply on that particular question.
Port forwarding is done on your router. You only need to port forward port 25565 and make sure your firewall isn't blocking that port. You can add "Allow" rules in your firewall for port 25565 incoming/outgoing. The clients will connect on a completely separate port in which you don't need to forward or allow through your firewall. Let me know if you've got any more questions!
