I get solid 60 FPS with minor, infrequent dips into the 50s using the 1.8 snapshots at default window resolution, max in-game settings (Fancy, render distance 16, 16x anisotropic filtering, vsync on...).
My specs for those who are interested:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Java 8 64-bit
2.67 GHz Intel i7 920 processor
6 (3x 2) GB DDR3-1066 memory
1 GB AMD HD 5770 graphics card with Catalyst 13.12 drivers
SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card with latest drivers
MSI X58 Pro motherboard
My system is fairly modest as you can see, with the newest parts bought in 2010 (the graphics card and OS). My ageing computer, with a budget-at-the-time graphics card, can wipe the floors with the modern versions of the game. Of course there can be technical issues not related to the hardware, but if the hardware is the issue then it needs to be pretty bloody old (or cheap) to not at least let you run the game smoothly at moderate video settings.
EDIT: Tried 1920x1080 in full screen, still solid 60 FPS.
Generally speaking, most games using Java for the graphics engine will require extreme optimization and upkeep in order to provide efficient output, and this usually only becomes a problem for people with sensitive hardware, or hardware that requires the perfect factors to guarantee maximum performance.
I'm back from my hibernation. Most likely gone so don't pm me.
1.7.2 runs much faster than 1.7.9, but 1.7.2 is buggier.
Praise be to Spode.
1.7.3 beta as a dual core I get bad lag, yet I remember getting it good on my old single core computer.
Turning off sound can help with lag
Zombie new AI was very bad for fps
New colored glass system was bad for FPS
I am interested to know if the new endermite from endermen teleportation will create new lag.
The more new blocks they add to world generation adds lag (Which is one reason I go why to the new stone types without any new use behind them)
New blocks/objects even if not being use adds lag and longer startup times
One reason redstone causes so much lag is it creates light updates...When it does not need to at all...
