What is your opinion of some of the new major biomes being added in 1.7? I left snowless Taiga and Extreme Hills + out because they are similar to biomes we have now.
I was a bit disappointed that oceans are being scaled waaaaaaaaaay back. I always sort of hoped for a continent style map, and it seemed fitting with the whole 'deep oceans' coming, but large biomes did take them a bit too far considering water (and boats) are still wildly underdeveloped. I guess I'm not wholly surprised they'd tone it down.
As for the other biomes, I'm always pleased as Minecraft expands. Unless they added a 'uber death biome that kills you when you look at it', I don't think there's such thing as a 'bad' one. Don't like it? Live somewhere else.

Ridiculously over-correcting based on community feedback seems to be Mojang's thing these days.

I only got one problem and that's some of the super high ones I read are sneaking into regular world generation. Extreme hills and jungles are already bad enough for people with older computers. Regular generation was never suppose to go past the old height limit.
The only changes I would make is more mesas (I can't find one and I've tried 8 seeds in the last 2 days!), especially the bryce mesas , and putting snow back in the taigas. I am one of the people that built extravagant houses and barns in the snowy taigas, only to get rain now and no snow regeneration...
I am at loss to why anybody could see a reason to have the Birch forest completely redone. Oceans do need to be slightly better and bigger. The roofed forest needs to be more dark, hostile and menacing. We need a way too obtain more podzol. i'm pretty happy with Ice spikes, mesas and savannahs.
Roofed forests are cool in my opinion because they look like those magical, dangerous forests in fairy tales. But other than that it looks almost the same as the usual forests.
The savannah is quite nice too, cos it looks like real savannahs in Africa.
Mesa: Too colorful and the bands of color often aren't straight. I find it really ugly and I avoid them (except for resources) whenever I can.
Mega Taiga: Okay. Never bothered with these. I never found them in survival anyway.
Roofed Forest: Make the trees taller, more spaced out, and have larger canopies. Then it would be good.
Birch Forest: Regular kind has trees that are too small (of course I think every tree but jungle trees are too small) but Birch Forest M is good because it gives me the tree size i've always wanted.
Savanna: Horribly repetitive. Then again, the whole generator is, but it shows the most here since it's so damn flat.
Deep Ocean: I dislike all ocean-related changes in this update. Remove it, bring back old oceans, et cetera.
Ice Spikes: Kinda surreal. I'm glad these are rare because something so strange would seem very odd if it were common. As a rarity, it's a nice find, unlike Mesas IMO.
Flower Forest: Same deal as with mesas, too colorful. I like the new flowers though so it's a good place to harvest them.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

I agree. It just seems like a regular forest but denser.
it has mushrooms but i dont think roofed forests has acacia trees?
The savannah is quite nice too, cos it looks like real savannahs in Africa.
Possibly denser? The main reason why the current roofed forest is so ugly IMO, is because the trees look way too short.

They're a rare form of fumarole that, in extremely cold conditions, creates a tower of ice around it as the steam they erupt freezes nearly instantly upon contact with the air. They're giant towers of cold ice spewing hot, volcanic air.
Honestly, that's why I think they need a bit of work. If Mojang doesn't want to put a volcano in every single ice spikes biome that has ice tunnels all around connecting the spikes (which would all have a hollow hole in the center) and the volcano's magma chamber (which would be very controversial, anyways), then I at least think that they should put a little pool of lava about 10 to 15 blocks beneath each spike.
