Ever since I got into playing Terraria awhile ago when the 1.2 update came out for it, I've felt like Minecraft has less of a purpose and I really can't see any other way of playing the game other than building stuff. I wish there was more to it than that because even the exploration and mining all seems like a means to an end, and that end is building artificial structures that don't really serve a purpose other than looking pretty.
Sure it's satisfying to dedicate yourself to a build and watch it form, but whereas in Terraria, there is a logical and addicting progression to things that give the game focus and playability. In Terraria there are bosses to conquer, difficult areas and enemies to overcome, and incredibly cool items and loot to obtain that enrich the experience and feel genuinely rewarding to obtain (wings that let you fly, magical weapons with various effects, and accessories that let you climb walls, double jump, or grapple with a hook onto surfaces).
I know Minecraft is about freedom and all, but I really wish it didn't require you to make your own fun; at least give us an option that is more fun than reaching The End. The game also desperately needs at least an item, armor, etc. that makes vertical travel quicker and more fun than just making block stairs. When I finally got a grappling hook in Terraria, it felt like Christmas morning.
Here's a few suggestions that I feel could make Minecraft better while preserving its spirit:
1. Strata: Make the world deeper and add layers to the earth; adding more difficult enemies and unique cave terrain at deeper layers.
2. Bosses: Add more bosses to the game that drop rare and valuable items when slain. You could summon them, or they could come after you when certain conditions are met.
3. Accessories: Terraria has a catalogue of awesome and interesting accessories that enrich the gameplay experience and make it feel different. A grappling hook for hooking to surfaces and travelling vertically, wings for limited flight, boots and claws for climbing walls, and various other things that make things less of a hassle and more fun once obtained.
Minecraft's progression is pretty crappy. You know something's wrong when the strongest enemies are only a little harder than the most common, and the enemies in the final area can be found in the first. I agree that Mojang should improve it (along with combat because really if you want to add harder enemies and areas you really should add a combat system that isn't crap) though it shouldn't be nearly as similar as Terraria. Personally, I feel like a LOT more should be added to the Nether and especially the End (we were promised the Sky dimension, after all, which most likely would have had the same level of content as a full dimension like the Overworld. We got the End as a replacement, which would be fine and dandy if the End were not a boss dimension) rather than making the world deeper, as that could cause a lot of lag since there would be larger chunks. Hell, improve the Overworld as well, as even that is lacking and it's where most of the game takes place.
I'm not sure that taking such a similar route to Terraria is a good idea, though. Taking some inspiration from Terraria? Good idea. Taking the same route as Terraria? Not a good idea, otherwise it'll make Mojang look bad (or cause a lot of undeserved hate on Terraria from rabid fanboys). Personally, I feel like Mojang should make a lot more use out of structures than Terraria does (for the most part the only challenging structure that Terraria has is the dungeon. Heck, you conquer the damn thing twice and it only gets stronger mobs the second time around.)
Though in general, pretty much everything that isn't building or redstone is really lacking. It kind of astounds me that Mojang calls this a finished game when aside from the mentioned aspects there really isn't that much to do in vanilla.
Notch himself has played Terraria and even recommended it, he's part of the reason it got popular. Although that was before Jeb took his place as lead dev,
I suppose there are some elements Minecraft can take some in some inspiration from. But they should really improve what's already in the game.
Minecraft really is a game about building. So far, at least. It's a total sandbox, no quest system, no motivation to improve your gear or make a bigger house other than "just because."
It would be great to see some sort of optional questing system, or a proceduraly generated system of enemies that get more and more difficult.
They could add dozens of rare items to the game that have special properties that actually are game changing, for example teleportation, or flying, or a pick axe that can destroy 3 blocks at a time or something like that.
They could add different iterations of the nether and each version would have monsters of a different difficulty.
There are literally so many options they could do to make the game have more purpose, it's almsot depressing. It's like theya re afraid to add something TOO different and all the 13 year olds will cry on the forums because "It's different, I DONT LIKE IT!"
Why not just play Terraria then? Also, you mention the grappling hook more than once saying Minecraft doesnt have something like that. What about ender pearls? I use them to zip around my worlds all the time.

Heh, personally the only reason I don't just entirely stop playing Minecraft and play Terraria instead is because I only have the console Terraria.
If Terraria was compatible with Mac, I'd be playing that.
Terraria is a great game. I play that as well, and find it entertaining.
When I want to play a hack-and-slash and item-heavy game like Terraria, I play Terraria. But when I want to play a much more relaxed (and far more creative) game like Minecraft, I want it to be Minecraft, not 3-D Terraria. They are separate games with separate play styles.
I really wish people would stop trying to convert one game into the other.
I've never played Terraria and never will, but yes Minecraft could do with improvements in that regard...although not too much, as this is primarily a sandbox, remember?
If they did this, we all know that the "Omg Miencrfat its an RPG nao RAGERAGERAEG" crowd would just flood the forums with more screaming and whining about wanting their simple nostalgic game back. Face it, Minecraft in vanilla form will never totally satisfy everyone 100% of the time. It is not possible.
Personally I like the fact that it's non-linear, as I don't find any real satisfaction in going through a prescribed escalation/route to pre-planned goals that are basically meaningless. At least I feel like I did something creative if I built a house or planned out a cool transportation route in MC. That's just me, though. There are already plenty of games with linear advancement, bigger and badder bosses, tons of weapons, etc.
I also think some of the fancier mods like Twilight Forest, Project Zulu, Thaumcraft, etc. add this sort of challenge to the game in a way that's more suited to Minecraft. I CAN defeat the TF Lich King or flood my world with flux and spend all my time fighting off horrible wraiths, but I don't HAVE to in order to enjoy the game. I can go tackle a dungeon and get advanced gear when I feel like it, at my own pace, or I can just not go in that dungeon at all if I'm not ready for it.

The point is to add things into the game that make it a better experience. Terraria is just an example.
If I wanted Terraria I'd play Terraria. But this is Minecraft.
So you are fine with A game that is:
1. Unfinished
2. Severely unpolished and bugged
3. Lacking in the .....well a lot of things. music, blocks, tiers, foods, dimensions ect.
So you would rather have what we have than maybe take a few steps towards Terraria.
Okay.

I'm not sure what any of that strawman has to do with Terraria.

This has nothing to do with the OP but yes. I would/do love having those 3 points as apposed to having Terraria. Mainly because there is already a Terraria to play and I dont like it.

Why do people keep bringing up more dimensions? Don't we have enough?
I rarely play Terraria at all, and it has different gameplay, strangely. Minecraft is 3D, while Terraria is 2D.
Redigit made the game (yes, he's also the creator of SMBX), and Mojang made Minecraft.
I should keep Minecraft as it is, but maybe add gold and dark chests that open via specific keys.

I shouldn't even dignify this pathetic attempt at an argument with a response, but hey, I'm bored, so let me try to clarify this for you...
I'm fine with Minecraft being Mincraft, and Terraria being Terraria, and really get irked when people push to try to make two separate games with separate play styles into the same game. It's the same thing as the annoying people that want to increase the combat in Minecraft until it becomes CoD with blocky graphics. Please stop trying to turn Minecraft from what it is into something it's not.
As for your points, I'll address them 1 by 1:
1. "Unfinished" -- I'm fine with Minecraft's level of "finished" as far as content goes. I don't feel that Minecraft needs tons more content to be considered "finished". That said, the devs are adding new content every update, and they are (arguably) trying to make sure that content fits the Minecraft theme.
2. "Severely unpolished and bugged" -- This is purely your opinion. I'll be the first to admit there are a lot of annoying bugs still present in Minecraft, and no, I'm not happy about that. I'd love to see the devs focus on fixing those bugs. But that has nothing at all to do with adding features from Terraria. I also totally disagree that adding features from Terraria is "polishing" a game. It's "altering" it, and there's a huge difference.
3. "Lacking in the..." -- Again, purely your opinion. I (and many other) do NOT feel that Minecraft is "lacking" simply because it doesn't have some of the things that Terraria does. Some might even say that the "lack" of all those things is Minecraft's strong point, in that it's not the convoluted mess that Terraria is.
As I said before, I enjoy both games quite a bit, but I enjoy them for different reasons, and I choose to play the one that more suits my mood at the time. I wouldn't want to see Minecraft try to become 3-D Terraria any more than I'd want Terraria to try to become 2-D Minecraft.
Totally disagree. Although it can feel like that to individuals, sure, and that's OK. Personally, I'm not into building & would rather explore/adventure. In that area, the game is a bit lacking. But anyway, "unlimited" world size isn't needed for building. It is a huge plus for exploring, though.
Both concepts feed off of each other; it's not really either/or.
You and I seem to be in the minority. I think Minecraft deserves a great structured system of desirable and acheivable goals of every difficulty and variety.
That being said, exploring for myself is only so gratifying as there is not a whole lot to discover. The random temples with loot makes exploring much more fun, and I'd like to see more things of a similar nature added to the game.
