I was extremely excited to learn about all the changes they're making to maps in the next update, until I discovered that you evidently no longer need to actually explore to fill in a map. It just automatically fills the entire thing in when you right-click an empty map.
Map making is supposed to be challenging; an endeavor that requires actual effort and time, and thus each map is valuable. Under the new mechanics, maps will become cheap and easy; an item so easily replaced that they will lose nearly all value. But more than that, it practically eliminates exploration as an activity. It takes all the fun out of it. No longer will you be able to push back the frontier and discover new lands; now, all you need to do is cross the border into the next grid and instantly learn all of it's secrets.
How lame is that? Why would they want to so seriously dumb down exploration just when maps are finally being given the overhaul they need? Is it really necessary to make map making such an absurdly simplistic task? Can't we keep all the improvements, like snap to grid, hanging on walls, and the new look, but also keep the need to fill in maps by walking around and exploring?
If a chunk has never been loaded before, you still need to go out and load it. The only actual change is you don't need to reexplore an area if you've been there without a map.

I'm the bard. Always will be. And no one EVER respects the bard.
Dinnerbone made an implication on Twitter (couldn't find the tweet right now) that the new boss would be in the over world.
It was a reply to someone asking if the new mob would be in the nether or in the end. He also used the names of the dimensions with lots of pun. The reply was something along the lines of "That went right over(world) your head now. Was that too cryptic?" I'll see if I can find the tweet. I don't really use Twitter at all so it might take awhile.
The Wither also emits void particles and apparently can be seen through void fog (haven't tested myself). My guess is that it can spawn from the void when you're deep undereground. Only once though. Or until you've defeated it. It's a boss after all. Not a random annoyance you meet every so often.
Maybe the new boss is summoned with these pyramids and beacon block. So do not make these pyramids too close to your base or it will wipe out everything, especially your animal farms!
There is a bug in which colored leather is not obtained when you middle click colored armor on a display case while in creative mode. However, when broken in survival mode, it gives you colored armor like it's supposed to.
Haha, anyone notice that in Dinnerbone's picture in the post above if you actually made the superflat world like that, you would 4 layers of TNT trying to explode across the whole loaded map, goodbye framerate.

OMG! THERE ARE SQUIDS IN THIS PICTURE! THAT TOTALLY MEANS SQUIDS WILL GET AN AI UPDATE IN THE NEXT UPDATE!
I wish...
So, just a weird thought. Since zombies can't pick up blocks, only items and such, does that mean that wool is now an item, like armor, and thus meaning we can have the full range of colors for wool!

Praise be to Spode.
Posted to his Twitter only an hour ago. This is going to definitely make it even more fun to do both building and Superflat challenges, I'd wager...

What is the implication on THAT do you folks figure? Is that a potential 1.4 release date?
EDIT: Ah, someone already made a post about this in the forum proper.

Or is this a little farfetched....
