Anyone else despise the level cap on the anvils? I have a Power V, Infinity I, Flame I, Unbreaking III bow that won't allow me to repair it. I think that with the addition of Enchanted books, they needed to increase the level cap.
Why should the addition of enchanted books have any bearing on the level cap of anvils? I don't see the connection. Enchanted books added the ability to trade enchantments, get specific enchantments without wasting diamonds on items to enchant, can be used in adventure maps and were also added to the loot tables in dungeon chests.

You Can't trade enchantments with books. If you can create a bow only with books that can't be repaired, then there is a problem with the level cap. You can't naturally get Unbreaking III on a bow, but if you use a book on it and the bow already has all the other enchantments, it becomes too expensive to repair. Doesn't sound like a good time to me.

I meant in a multiplayer server you could trade an enchanted book with another player. For example my little nephew doesn't have the patience to stand in front of an xp trap and punch mobs for several minutes to get xp to enchant. I can now do that for him and make books and he can use the ones he wants.
They system is weighted to make natural enchantments on the enchanting table better than combining several enchantments together to make the same thing. Each combination adds levels to the items cost. Books aren't meant to replace actually enchanting items on the enchanting table.

I didn't create the bow with just books, I enchanted a bow and got Inf I, Power IV, and Flame I. Then I added a Power IV and a Unbreaking III with books. Those are the only books I used, and both powers are only accessible via books (for a bow). I understand that books aren't meant to replace normal enchanting, and I don't want it to. I just don't want to feel like I wasted a lot of time to create a bow or something and not be able to repair it because it's too good.

It's sure an annoyance, but it's a balancing mechanic so you can't just endlessly repair uber-items. That's why repair cost goes up every time you repair a particular item!
For example, you should try to distribute your enchantments over a few items. One of the mechanics is that it gets more expensive to repair the more enchantments are on the item. With only one enchantment, it only adds 1 level cost. With 2, it's 3 extra levels. With your third enchantment, it adds six levels to the enchantment cost, and that's on top of the actual cost of the enchantments. At four different enchantments, you're adding 10 levels to the repair cost!
I'm sympathetic to your issue, but the mechanics are actually well balanced.
Let's go over the maths:
Infinity I x 8 = 8 levels
Power V x 1 = 5 levels
Flame I x 4 = 4 levels
Unbreak III x 2 = 6 levels
Four+ enchants = 10 levels
Two previous uses in the anvil = 4 levels
It all comes up to 37. It looks like if you use a low-durability bow to do it with, you can squeak out one more decent repair and in fact you can also manage another very-low-durability repair after that (if you really want to spend 40 enchantment points on 1/3 durability for the bow). You need to have shot a new bow at least 31 times in order for its durability to only cost 3 extra levels. As long as I haven't skipped over anything in my math, it looks like you should be able to work around the level cap with this bow.
Sorry, but having five enchantments on an item pretty much renders it "not long for this world". Try repairing your bow with one that has 253 or fewer uses left on it, and I believe you can perform your repair- but only one or two times before it's bye bye bangin' bow.

Thank you for your help, I was not able to repair it at all, unfortunately. I realize that it's well balanced, but perhaps a little warning could pop up saying "You may not be able to repair this item", when the levels get to dangerously close to 40, or something like that. Just an idea.
I am trying to make the ultimate diamond sword, and I had a question.
1) Is there a max of 3 enchantments allowed per item?
Nope! You can have 4 enchants on a sword. That said, you can't have sharpness V, looting 3, knockback 2 and fire 2 on a sword, since that costs too many levels
so i got a bow with just power 2 and i enchanted a book and got power 1 and i put the bow in the left slot and the book in the right slot and nothing no power 3 ? or is bow only allowed power 2 ?

Bows are allowed up to power 5. The reason it's not working is because to increase the level of an enchantment, you have to use two same levels. So, if you wanted to get a power 3 on your bow that already has power 2, you would need to combine it with a book that has power 2 on it
sorry if this has already been answered . i am playing latest snapshot as of 8/14/14 . if i have diamond sword with Bane of Arthropods iv and diamond sword with sharpness III i don't understand why i cant combine the to in an anvil . both undamaged . to have both enchantments on one .

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Well, just remember that next time!
If you want to make sure you don't pass the cap, spend a little time learning what's on this page: http://www.minecraft...Anvil_mechanics
