The main role of these extra blocks is to introduce more texture for people who like building stuff. Carpet is essentially a "paint" to throw on the surface of some blocks rather than having to dig out a whole layer. It essentially makes buildings a little bit shorter rather than having two layers between "floors" so you can have different ceilings from floors using wool blocks.
The launcher in particular has been something I've really enjoyed. I can switch back and forth between different versions of Minecraft, and more importantly I can have several different modded versions of Minecraft. I wish Forge worked better with different versions out of the box, but that is a Forge problem and not something to do with Mojang and the launcher. I still use the old launcher too!
As for the clay blocks, I found them incredibly interesting. The adobe look of buildings made with them is something that definitely gives another kind of feel to structures and can be delightful in the hands of a good map maker. For somebody who is more into the adventure and "hack n' slash" aspects of Minecraft, I'd agree that they are mostly pointless.... but not all people play Minecraft with the same goals in mind. The Wither and other mobs have been added to the game making the exploring aspects more exciting, so I fail to see the real problem here.
I agree with you concerning the clay blocks. An awesome addition. The only thing I can say about them is this though. Without respiration II or III, good luck getting decent amounts in a short time frame.
Did anyone see that picture of the extremehills biome Jeb posted? Looks like the spruce trees are moving in, they seem to be much more common than regular trees. It reminds my of the alpine areas of the U.S.
Not only that, but there were no black spots to be seen in that screenshot as well.
Unless I missed a tweet he didn't exactly confirm new biomes, more that he's been tweaking the old ones. (I think The screenshot shows that 'extreme hills' now has a decent amount of trees). New biomes could be fitted into what he said though.

Well When editing Biomes changes can be made but when adding a whole new set then you get more bugs since you don't know how it reacts to pre existing code. and as he said: Chunk edges will be apparent
So extremehills possibly have trees in them now so thye look more like actual mountains now? Heck, if they get rid of that terrible neon bluish-green grass color I might actually like that biome!
I've been keeping an eye on dinnerbone's twitter for a little while now, from what i can tell so far i think i am going to really like this update,
from what i can tell there is FINALLY a sprint key, now i won't have to worry about failing parkour sprint jumps when double tapping W
Aside from all the new possible features (Cherry trees, Being able to bind function keys (point of view, cinematic mode, etc.), and a hinted
community feature, etc.) Minecraft should also get some new ores as well IMO, after a while of playing the game you see diamonds and gold so much that it becomes kind of boring, the only ore i never usually see is emerald ore, of course thats probably due to the fact its so rare it would be easier to go out and find an npc village and just trade for one. As for Oceans those desperately need an update, the fact that they are so large makes it annoying to try and cross them without a boat (even then boats are now much harder to control) Maybe they should add Island villages to oceans?
I definitely like the idea of tinted glass as well, but it would bug me a bit if it didn't tint the light.
From what i can tell everyone, despite people saying things like, alpha or beta was better or jeb ruined the game, i see a bright
future for the 1.7 update and for minecraft
Because Jeb has edited at least one biome (the extreme hills) -which can break people's chunk edges, causing annoyance- its likely he'll do much much more terrain tweaking for 1.7 rather than wait a few months and make more people angry
That is a bloody good point. I like your way of thinking. It's all for the greater good...
Honestly, this doesn't sound like a good update at all. Possibly worse than 1.6 even. I hate the idea of a new sprint button. I hope Mojang eradicates that idea. The new biomes seem cool, though.

Other then making you have to press a new button (use caps lock to keep it on) what make tapping w twice better?

Like oikul said why do you complain if you can change it to double tap w (maybe)
I know, it's like Mojang are in stealth mode right now...
Praise be to Spode.

I hope tinted light will prodouce tinted lag.
its not that bad,
play peaceful for a while then crack it up
I always like to pretend that my world was invaded by monster after 10 days of game time
