I think its a Great Idea I mean it wouldn't make pigs useless unless we are able to EAT the horse. Now that would make the whole idea bad. Hopefully they make the horses un-eatable if that's even a word xD.

I wish they would get rid of that animation where the horse bents down to graze. It makes leading them very hard. They should at least remove the animation when connected to a lead. Only major complaint (I would also like them to be less laggy)
I think that horses are a good idea, just that they need balancing.
1. Pvp would be impossible without a horse. People with horses have more health, speed, maneuverability and combat endurance than someone without one, whats more, they suffer no disadvantage for using them. I would suggest ways of knocking other people from horses, e.g. a sprinting attack from the side. If you got knocked off, you shouldn't be able to get back on, and should suffer some kind of sizable disadvantage for the rest of the fight. I also suggest the horses are less maneuverable, by making them take a while to speed up, slow down and turn. This would give "foot soldiers" a viable way of combating them. I also suggest that horses in combat have some kind of risk associated with them. e.g. you are knocked off your horse, and inflicted with slowness and weakness. You have fallen off, and damaged yourself in a way that makes you easy pickings. Perhaps a spear should be added, that is good at killing horses.
2. Horses render all other modes of transport useless, especially considering how easy they are to tame. It costs a single saddle to create a mode of transportation that is faster, safer, and easier to prepare than a mine cart. They can also carry items. This kind of makes mine carts pointless. Perhaps if they required some constant maintenance, or were bad at traversing rough terrain. The mountain horses we have at the moment seem a little ridiculous. Perhaps horses need to be fed all the time (Hay bales? ) or require iron for horseshoes? Perhaps they have bad tolerance to damage, and can break legs very easily making them fragile. Perhaps they move slower normally, but can have bursts of the current normal speed. (like sprinting) Perhaps they need to be cripplingly rare. So rare that finding one is only likely after you are very set up. What if they moved very fast if they saw you. In the wild horses run around in big herds. Having this function would make taming them way herder, and potentially more balanced.
3. They-they look funny!
No really. You look retarded riding them, they are too small. I think that perhaps donkeys need to be the size of current horses.
It looks silly to have this super fast baby horse supporting steve as he carries his 400 tons of stone home for the day.
I like the idea of horses, but those are the issues I have with them in their current state.
Honestly, I couldn't care less about the horses. Donkeys, on the other hand, make me extremely excited. I can't wait to be able to carry around more items while being on a faster mount. Is there any advantage to having a Horse rather than a Donkey, or for that matter, a Mule instead of a Donkey?
Personally, I think horse saddles should be craftable, but not horse armor. As long as horses are pretty rare, it would make trying to use them too frustrating if saddles were just as hard or harder to find. The effort should go into finding the horses, taming them, and keeping them alive. Whether you have horses or not, you're going to go mining and possibly find dungeons. I can understand horse armor not being craftable, though, since it discourages players from using them in battle as much.
As far as balancing them with pigs or rails in terms of speed, I personally think they're fine. It's random how fast a horse is or how much health a horse has, and you can't tell how fast a horse is until you have it tamed and saddled. A horse can actually be slower than a pig or a mine cart. Perhaps rail speed can be increased, but I don't think horses make rail obsolete because you can just jump in a rail and go AFK whereas with a horse you still have to control it and know where to go. As for pigs, I never really used them for transportation since I didn't want to keep making carrots on sticks, not to mention riding them isn't as controllable as riding a horse.
I really don't see a problem with Horses being rare, or saddles only being found in chests or traded with villagers. Once you have two horses, it no longer matters how rare they are.
Even if you happen to be on a world with no generated structures you can still convert villager zombies, make a villager breeding pit, and wait for a butcher to turn up so you can fleece it of its saddle-based goodness.

Why even add the carrot on a stick in the previous update if they were going to have horses? Seems dumb... Plus whats the use for riding pigs now? They seem to be whipping out lazy recycled idea's now. (Not saying I dislike the game now, I still love it)

I think the whole concept of pig-riding has always been a joke anyway. If Mojang intended to make the pigs a useful form of transport, they probably would've made them faster and easier to control.
Adding horses to the game is a great idea but Mojang said before they wont add horses because you can already raid pigs *face palm*
As Minecraft is in fact not a religion, nothing the developers say is written in stone. I guess we should all remember that instead of expecting or assuming anything from them.
I actually think this makes pvp much harder and takes it to the next level. think about it... lancing, moving targets while shooting from a horse? It's gonna bring a new aspect to the game! =D

It was for making the achievement "When Pigs Fly" easier and they did not intend to add horses. Horses are the "Hardcore" version of the pig

(Edited because I thought of more reasons.)
