The ModAPI has been announced many times.
It was planned shortly after Alpha 1.0.1
First, it was supposed to be in 1.3, then in 1.4 then Curse accidentally stated that there will be ModAPI in 1.5 but since has been delayed by Mojang.
1.5 is one of the major updates, titled "Redstone Update" confirmed that there will be no new mobs in there.
Jeb has announced, 1.6 will get new mobs but not 1.5.
1.6 will also drop support for Java 5 and PowerPCs. It is confirmable, but I would suggest some mobs that you might even like.
First of all, what mobs do we like for 1.6? 1.5 will be releasing in March 2013, but, I don't know about 1.6 very much, it only said new mobs.
um... i really dont like mods anyway so I dont care about the mod API. And NOONE on the mojang team has said that the mod API will be in 1.6 like debugman said dont be spreading rumors like that. *cough* troll *cough* And can you show us where they "planned mod API" I would love to know. Dear God NO RED DRAGONS please no. Who even came up with the red dragon anyway? *cough* a troll *cough* fishes and others please! Thats all.
Really I want all of those* ...... but what I really really want if I only get one wish for a new mob......
Giant mobile venus fly traps like the ones from the beginning of Kings Field 2. That walked around during the day and ranged from neutral to hostile (dependant on color).
*well not so much monkeys and I would probably lump tigers and jaguars into one general "large cats" category.
And then you go on to post a link to a Dinnerbone tweet stating "I'm not sure where people are getting this from, but we never said that the API is in 1.5 in either of our panels (1.5 one or API one)".
...?
EDIT: According to the Wiki, what you said about being planned for 1.3 and so on is correct, but then I don't understand why he'd tweet that? Just because the source wasn't Mojang, I guess? I'm confused.
That is, i don't know. But there will be no ModAPI in 1.5 .
Mhh railcraft... Out since the end of 2011, and since beginning 2012 they implemented the TNT Carts as far as I know. 1.5 Snapshots with them were released a few months ago, hard to say that jeb invented the TNT Minecart idea then.
Same goes for hoppers from buildcraft, just check out when the newest version of BC was released
Just check out their website scroll down to the 1.4.6 update, then look what they implemented on their wiki in that update. You will find guess what yeah hoppers, and that was before the 1.5 announcement that these would contain hoppers
Do you know something? Mojang is a small group of people, much smaller than the modding community. Mods are spewed out like it's nothing, updates aren't. If mojang wouldn't add stuff that hasn't been implemented before in a mod we would have pretty much nothing.

odd, I always hear people complaining about enderchests, and now mostly about the new minecarts and hoppers. never once have i heard anything about the pistons. Yeah, that was a mod before it came into vanilla as well. I'm tired of people saying "omg they steal that from mod!".
Back on topic...
I'd prefer a new hostile mob in the nether. the only hostile mob in the nether (outside of a nether fort) is a ghast and a power 1 bow usually fixes that problem in a single hit. I was excited to hear of wither skeles, then dissapointed when i learned they only spawned in nether forts. there should be something that makes u fear the nether. its easy enough to avoid lava and steeps cliffs.
Perhaps the modding API could be coming out it 1.6
Mojang added a feature to the most recent snapshot called "Minecraft Realms", with the realms button replacing the textures button on the start screen. And for those of you that remember, back when the Texture Packs button was named "textures and mods"
Apparently a few people are testing this feature too. perhaps minecraft realms is the way that mojang will distribute and allow the download of mods?
Also the fact that the signature at the bottom of the launcher now reads "Minecraft team and Minecraft Realms Team" must mean that this is definitely for something big, and the biggest thing that i can think of which can happen to minecraft is the modding API
What I've always been concerned with is that authors of mods that I use extensively will get fet up and stop supporting their mods. Then when the new version of Minecraft comes out, I will either have to ignore it or hold back. Likewise, sometimes there is quite a wait before certain mods get updated for obvious reasons.
As for the above poll, I couldn't just choose one. I would LOVE for mo' creatures to be implemented into the main game. It's far more immersive having that many interesting creatures (hostile and docile alike) roaming about. You never know what you might encounter. Vanilla minecraft really lacks variety when it comes to mobs and that is something I only realized AFTER playing with Mo' Creatures and then doing so without it after the next update.

Minecraft Realms are just like Co-Op in XBox 360, which focuses in Survival.
Actually, the Minecraft Realm were released for 1.5, but you stated that Mod API for Minecraft Realms, no.
you know, Mod API and Minecraft Realms are different.

It's not like Mojang has updated the game fairly often though...
Red Dragons should be added, i think it will someday, other things i think that can be added are monsters, i think Minecraft is easy after you get hang of it... And an Iron Armor as well, but no new dimensions please!
Also, the Pigmen will surely be added... (Blergh) I dont like Pigs... But i have a sword... No problem! =D
We need more utility mobs as well, we have only 2, they should have cool abilities, nothing overpowered, but unique abilities, i am not sure which abilities, but that would make them interesting.
More tameables maybe? We have 2 only and Ocelots dont fight, they scare Creepers, ok, but we need someone else... Someone useful!
Another idea, the Beacon should have a power to make crops grow faster, might not be useful as you get sheetloads of Bones in middlegame.
Ah and of course... Mod API!!! That's a must have!

1.6 is announced during Mojam.
First of all, you can see Jeb's tweet here about 1.6 : https://twitter.com/...301377818066944
Dinnerbone and Jeb both posted for ModAPI , here's the links:

I'll leave it up to you to decide about the new mobs you want.
P.S : I want fishes!
Edit: and whales.
...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
Good thing they weren't then!

OK, i just updated the description.

What else would a TNT minecart look like. Think things through before you post.

That's correct. API is totally different entity.

Hmm, close to Minecraft 2.0 now

1.6 is looking pretty meh to me unless Mojang is thinking what i'm thinking should be done with the mobs.
Also, the Pigmen will surely be added... (Blergh) I dont like Pigs... But i have a sword... No problem! =D
