Browsing upon YouTube videos, I have happened upon one that has shown me something that I find disturbing about the new Minecraft update. If you watch this YouTube video from 6:30-7:00 ( ) you will find that mobs will now be afraid to walk on rails. Ever since I first saw this, it's been eating away at my perception of how enjoyable Minecraft will be in the near future. There are countless ways I can see rails being abused with or without placing them including, but not limited to:
- No longer needing doors for a house and simply place a couple rails in front of an entrance instead
- Surrounding a house in rails and creating a "safety-zone" or "mob-filter"
- Quickly causing skeles to be fixed around a corner when chased to hurt them at no consequence
- Exploring an abandoned mine-shaft becomes easier when evading zombies by crossing the rails
- People will have no reason to keep railways lit up at night and become 'softer' at Minecraft
- Efforts to beat hardcore mode will be made fun of for these reasons
- Blocking off dangerous areas on a budget will be too easy
- Rails will randomly become an essential item for newly spawned players
- Many more reasons are out there I'm sure, just got home from work and tired
- Contraptions involving mobs in Minecarts will no longer be possible
That being said plus more that can be said, it's only fair to provide what people and/or Mojang can do as an alternative to this "feature". So here's what can be done:
- Simply don't allow mobs to SPAWN on rails but still let them cross
- then players would only need to keep their rails 2 blocks above ground level
- Players should keep their rails fenced in at the very least anyway
- Players could enclose their rails in tunnels or above ground and lit-up as usual
- If you HAVE to have a mob be afraid to cross rails make it only the ENDERMAN since it can teleport
- Perhaps make rails enchantable with something like "mob-ward" to result in the same current effect
- Perhaps only make powered/activated rails mob-resistant instead
- Perhaps make the mob-resistant "feature" difficulty dependent
-Do SOMETHING besides making mobs afraid of all rails PLEASE... It will NOT help my Minecraft experience nor will it help a lot of other people's experience either. I would very much appreciate as much support on this as possible to help an understanding take place. It would be heartbreaking to see this wonderful game gain so much potential while loosing so much realism at the same time. Give this suggestion as much voice as possible if you can. If nothing else, thank you for taking the time to read this. I do not post a lot, but this is something I simply HAD to voice.
Your concerns are exaggerated. The rails aren't a force field that stops mobs. They will cross them if they see you. This is primarily ment to keep them from interrupting the semi automated systems that can now be made with all the new features. In reality its more like mobs 'avoid' crossing rails instead of mobs 'won't' or 'can't' cross them. It's a good addition that actually goes beyond the intended purpose and will alos make very long rail ways more feasible because now mobs won't just chill out on the tracks and mess up the three thousand block trip a player is making by sending them in the wrong direction. And You would still have to light up the tracks as a zombie standing right next to the tracks could still throw off your cart and mess up the perfectly spaced powered rails that a player has laid.
Your concerns have been voiced and rebuked before multiple times. You are extremely late to the table on this one. So give up. If you don't like it then too bad really. 1.5 will be out soon if the recent bug fix only snapshots are anything to go by and this will be a feature.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
Your entire argument is a slippery slope fallacy. Try again.

"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."
You ever had a nether rail and have pigmen just jump across your path? You ever wanted to afk because the rail ride is long as hell but you end up getting creepered the second you walk away? This is what that is for, I support this change. As the last post said, your reactions are exaggerated. Mobs can still be force spawned on rails too, meaning it's not impossible to get them onto rails. You'll just have to come from above with w/e system you're using.
Enough abuse. I think this is something you should pay attention about, because the game could have a scandal, but since cobble is much cheaper than rails, people might as well craft cobblestone fences instead of rails.
However, I do also think that the zombie didn't cross because he was in creative mode, but if the zombie still wouldn't have crossed, it should only not cross when a minecart is approaching at a minimum speed at about 7 blocks away. However, at the minimum. if this update is still going to have mobs cross rails, then in the abandoned mineshafts the mobs should be able to cross.
It's a good change. Placing a barrier of rails around your house so that nothing can come? Fences do it at a better job and it's cheaper. No longer needing doors? Honestly, what's the point in saying that? Doors would do the exact same, and it'd look uglier. A lot of people in Minecraft play to make things look good and that wouldn't look that great. It's a good change.
I, personally have worked with this, and this issue has already been brought up
it is NOT a viable option or replacement for fences and walls IN ANY WAY the mobs will still come after you when they see you, like what has been said before. Plus they're too expensive for what they would be used for and what they actually do. i've said it before i'd only put them, late in the game outside my moat that's outside my wall that's outside my wooden fence that's outside my house

I think the feature is pretty useless. It only works on closed circuits (which probably amount to less than half of all railways,) doesn't stop mobs spawning on your rails (very problematic for tunnels with nowhere for slimes or Nether mobs to get off the track,) and makes it harder to catch mobs when you want to catch them.
They just need to prevent mob spawning and let fences do the rest. Rails are transparent blocks. I don't know why they don't prevent spawning to begin with, like slabs do.

Something tells me the topic creator likes playing on train tracks.
And, if he states a reason why he doesn't, then he answered his own question on why mobs avoid rails.
Mobs shouldn't be afraid of rails themselves. But they should be afraid of minecarts that is moving at a high speed. If they can't get away in time, they get run over by the minecraft and slows the mnecart, knocks the mob back and deals high damage.

Do you like red panda's? They are so cute! Message me if you like the Red Panda!
Does this mean that mobs will no longer wander around abandoned mine shafts? I must say I did enjoy being happened upon by the occasional wandering mob in shafts, in areas I had already lit up but that through some path were connected to dark areas. It added to the excitement.

It just means that mobs that are not chasing after you will not cross rails. Not a huge change. Just something that could help. Plus, iron is harder to get than wood so a fence would still be better.
The key word there is AFRAID. they are AFRAID to walk on rails, this doesn't mean they will never walk on them ever it means the same thing the your mother told you about standing on the tracks. But if there was free ice cream on the other side you would cross... i hope.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
Divine intervention?

That would look dumb and would be expensive
You know fences do this job a lot better. And it would be expensive.
I don't think this would work very well and not true the ice cream (you) is still on the other side.
Remember there's ice cream!
ice cream
I don't understand what you are saying
On a budget? I think not! You can use 1log or six iron for this your choice.
Um no I would rather have an enchanting table still.
I can tell.
Name one contraption that this will interfere with. And this isn't true you can force them on a mine cart
You obviously have never build a nether track to another part of your world.
Noobs already do that.
They do.
they do.
This is just stupid.
What other enchantments would you have on rails? Power? Light? Haters like you would say that this is the dumbest idea you've ever heard
what would that do?
there is all ready one you may call it Peaceful
You have one up vote one your post and the guy that posted right after you has 17 including me. Remember what your mom said about standing on the rails. Sorry nope! No problem. Yup, you did.
I don't try to be a jerk but I have to say some thing to every hater on the forums.
That's just my two cents.
