Just curious. Is Mojang actually planning to make hunger optional, or is that just rumor I've been hearing around? I've been hearing about it for quite some time, is there any source from Mojang saying they're definitely planning it?
It was supposed to be optional (via a realism slider) when it was first announced, but that never happened.
The last I heard about it from Mojang was a video with Notch answering questions where he responds with, "No, for the same reason as [couldn't understand what he said]."
My only problem with hunger is that it's not very easy to get enough food very early in the game.
Apples are rare, crops need to grow, and animals, well, I usually like to cook their meat beforehand, which also takes some time until I have a furnace and a simple base. Regardless, the right animals can also be rare under some circumstances.
It's only easy when you spawn next to a village.
Otherwise I don't mind the hunger system.
Maybe there could be berry bushes or something. Easily accessible, spawning in every biome, and always dropping some easy food.
While I think that most peoples ideas on how hard it is to stay alive the first few nights are a little exaggerated (see the bonemeal war of attrition.) I do agree that more food that is easier to get, but also less filling would be a good idea.
Anyways: to stay on topic. I doubt they are going to be adding any real 'options' for hunger. At this point it seems like the hunger bar is pretty cemented into the game as a fairly static mechanic. (static here implying that it isn't changing any time soon.)

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
Overall I think a hunger option is a terrible idea, it's a huge part of the game now and is it would be as ridicules as an option to remove creepers spesifically.
Truth be told, I love how we already have optional hunger but I'm the only one in this thread to mention it. Yes, the hunger option is tied with difficulty which people view as "not a real choice" due to having hunger disabled also disables aggressive mob spawning, but it's still an choice. Really, I think that some people just want hunger to have it's own toggle but just aren't able to articulate that desire.
My avatar is a two tailed fox named Miles "Tails" Prower. He may only be 8 years old,but he is a highly skilled engineer. He stands 2'7" tall, and can use his tails to fly short distances, and run at near supersonic speeds.
How would you heal? Almost every food heals hunger not hearts, unless you also had life regen like in peaceful.
Changing the food to just fill hearts won't work either since every food would have to be balanced again just for one optional mode.
Things like this are best left to mods.

I was thinking in terms of mobs doing more damage now than they did pre-Hunger, presumably, to balance out the regeneration effect.
Wrong. You still take hunger damage on Easy until you are below 10/20 health. Considerably better than 1/20 health on normal, but still pretty bad.

The original buffs were 1.8, which had neither of those, though.
