Seriously there is this article on the minecraft wiki about this but I really don't know if he would implement? Any word about this? Also think about all the cool deadly traps that could be implemented. Either way we can only hope.
Just like Lecterns, it probably won't be implemented. Also, Spike Blocks were going to be controlled by redstone, so maybe when 1.5 overhauls redstone like it says, then we will get Spikes. I actually don't see much of a point of spikes in the first place.
When it comes to spikes i was just think they could be a placeable item that does nothing but deals you damage. Nothing redstone fancy or anything you know?

Sure spikes would be really, really awesome to have. But theres a lot I would like to have before this and to be honest, I dont think they will add this, due the fact that this was Notch idea from the start, not Jeb's or Dinnerbones and well... We can at least hope it'll get added
First of all, it was a community idea, and Jeb responded to it on reddit first.
Make the cactus on a flower pot deal damage without destroying itens.
You can already place flower pots in adjacent blocks.
But a spike block would be better. Specially if it were like a piston where if extended, instead of the piston arm you get spikes, that would be great for adventure maps.

The recipe for sticky pistons is slime ball and a normal piston.
The spiked piston that was briefly discussed may (no promises!) be replaced with a "spike block." It would kind of be like a spike carpet that you could put in pits or crushing pistons.
Since dispenser now use item upon activation it would be great if putting sword in it would actually use the sword like a spike. The better th e sword used in the dispenser the more damage it would deal. I think it's one easy way to implement those spike, and anyway you can put dispenser on floor and ceiling now.
i love how everyone is just talking like this wasn't posted months ago

It's ok that this was necro-bumped. Aren't we always saying to do a search first? That's what he did.
Anyway, with the recent snapshots I think this is a good time to think about spikes again. With the dispenser's ability to now be placed up and down I think that they can be used to dispense a spike 'block'.
So what you do is make a spike block out of iron and a cactus or something, then you place one inside a dispenser. When the dispenser is powered the spike be placed in front of the dispenser facing outward from it. When it is powered again, assuming the dispenser is empty, it will suck it back up. Spikes can face upwards downwards and sideways, and can be placed on any surface by hand if you wish.
Additionally spikes can have other interesting and useful properties. For example, as someone suggested earlier, you could walk through them if you are sneaking (like Tomb Raider), but running, jumping, sprinting, falling etc. will cause you to take a lot of damage. Also if they extend from a dispenser they will always deal damage even if you are sneaking, and spikes on walls will always do damage.
Also, if spikes on ceilings are not attached to anything they could be affected by gravity and fall, spearing anything on the way down.
And they wouldn't destroy drops at all, making them good for mob traps.
Spikes would be up for an interesting gameplay in adventure maps. Sneaking through them makes no damage, while walking and running does.
When someone falls on them from more than 2 blocks, they're instakilled, otherwise they lose a lot of health. Items dropped in them won't get destroyed, and they can be usable with pistons or dispensers where they can suddenly pop out.
Differently to lava and cacti they can also be placed on the ceiling and eventually on iron bars.

(Bold added by me).

After reading all these spike-idea comments I was starting to like the idea. But now I'd much rather a simple chair.
*Sigh...* It always comes back to the traps for some. Meanwhile, I'll just head on back to my quiet beach and fish...
