So why do they keep making the beam worse? The original lightning style beam was awesome, it needed something extra, but it was pretty nice. The second version, while it added something for its movement look like lace. This one? A big square stick? Really?
It should be a beam of magic/light not a big stick, maybe turn down the opacity a bit, I had hoped they would tweak it in the 12w40b update, but I just checked, still looks idiotic. They need something that combines all the approaches they have so far.
Lightning style light, with the rotating "lace" inside, and counter-rotating central column, with about 50% opacity. Plus particles, the thing really should produce some.
The 'big stick' is a compromise. You may notice that the original light beam is there alongside the big stick. The reason for Jeb removing the light beam in the first place, and adding the electric noodles, was because you could see portal blocks and other things through the light beam when you weren't supposed too. The electric noodles fixed that issue by removing it entirely as it was apparently impossible to fix. This, of course, came with the disadvantage of looking stupid.
So Jeb did something clever, he added back in the light beam, but also added in the solid cubic light beam so that portal blocks would be hidden behind it.
I'm afraid it's not an option between the light beam, the electric noodles and the big stick, it's an option between the big stick and the electric noodles. I, personally, prefer the cubic light beam over the electric noodles.

Agreed completely

You don't fix issues by adding s***. Why not take the time to FIX the portal rendering issue? What a novel idea. And this has a light beam that is so faint you can barely tell.
IT SUCKS! Fix the problem Jeb, fix the d*** problem!

They're rewriting rendering to solve problems like these. Just because you're ignorant, doesn't mean you should yell at Jeb and them for something that NOTCH wrote. These things take time. I'm sorry that you can't comprehend that coding isn't as easy as typing solveProblem(hurr durr). Also, one of the problems with the original beacon was that it recycled the ender crystal texture, which caused a fair number of issues. Oh, and now texture pack creators can actually change the beacon and beacon block. Who would've thought?

I'm saying that Jeb should not do something half assed to hide the other bug, he should focus on that bug until it is fixed. Ya, it will be a lot of work, but making things look stupid to cover up a problem is never a solution, at the very least he could have made it look good. And when did we go to personal attacks? An argument with only two posts, and already personal attacks? I criticized Jebs method of solving the problem, because it was the wrong way. Instead of wasting time on two poor designs to cover it up, which are unneeded since it is a pre release, he could just work on the real problem some more. Time will be taken obviously, nobody even suggested that he could do it faster, I suggest that he do it more efficiently, by not wasting time.
And yes, in fact if one puts some work into it and implements a function called solveProblem() to fix the problem in 'hurr durr' it might just work.

It's not a personal attack against just you. It's against anyone who assumes that a problem as large as the render one can be solved easily. I even doubt a method solveProblem() would do anything at all, considering the problem is not just in one snippet of the code, but in the entirety of the render code. It's not as simple as an override or update method. And what you still fail to understand is that they ARE working on the problem. That's the point I was making. They are ALREADY putting time and effort into a new improved render engine. Which, by the way, is a ton of work. It's like reinventing the wheel.
And in the meantime he should remove the beacon completely and only add it back in when it's fixed!
Or he could add a less than ideal quick fix that allows people to use the feature now and continue to work on the problem so that it can be changed to something later.
Not necessary, the beacon isn't even in the game yet, the needed solution can be made neer release of v1.4.1 if need be. No point in doing it now, when it may not be needed. And honestly, the beacon has playability issues as well that may make putting it into this version a bad idea, unless they get fixed as well.

IT SUCKS! Fix the problem Jeb, fix the d*** problem!
Because that bug was created by Notch back in Alpha and every attempt to fix it has failed?
Please, since you are such a programming genius, why don't you make a mod that fixes the issue?

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
The Beacon just needs to be cheaper and have the HUD simpliefied.
What's complicated about the HUD? It doesn't seem to need simplification in my opinion. Also, it's really not that expensive, for an end-game item. I've got a legit beacon in my survival world, with the bottom layer iron, second layer gold, third layer diamond, and top layer emerald. I've got enough iron to make at least another full beacon, if I only use iron. And that took me, like a little over a week (of casual gameplay) to do. People who say it needs to be cheaper need to actually legitimately build one in survival before making judgement, because flying around in creative and making one does not give an accurate representation of the difficulty, and very few people can accurately estimate such things without experiencing them firsthand.
I too preferred the original beam. I could have lived with the transparency issue; especially because portal blocks and ice basically do the same thing. The beacon still has other problems though.
They still need to decide what exactly the point of using different materials for it is. Right now you can have a fully iron pyramid and sacrifice an iron ingot, or you can have a fully emerald pyramid and sacrifice an emerald and get exactly the same effects.
We have at most 3 more snapshots until 1.4, unless it gets delayed, so hopefully we see some progress with this.
The beacon should have that entity that spins around like it did before, but only spin when activated. While not activated, it should go to a stationary state.
In my opinion, it got better. I hated that stupid straw looking beam.

Err, where? Last I saw, he took note of the bug where only one beacon was visible at a time. (Which was fixed in 12w40b.)

It looks better than the spinning blue noodles, and in my opinion, looks better than the ugly lightning thing.
I am ninja'd far too often.
