By building the max pyramid size for the new Beacon, you can get the Jump Boost II effect. This effect can be very useful when it comes to building and other things:
Select Jump Boost in the list of buffs to the left, and then click it again on the right side:
While you have the buff, you can jump two and a half blocks:
Beacon Uses
1) Faster Mining. When used in combination with Pheonix Mining (http://www.minecraft...2/page__st__80) can create some of the fastest diamond mining in the game. Setting it up initially can take a little getting use to because you need to mine skylights from the surface to layer 12 every 66 blocks accross, but it adds very little setup time in comparison to the massive mining speed boost awarded for your entire mining operation. (Tip: You can dig straight down in relative safety using a fire resist potion. Just dont find yourself a ravine..)
2)... WTF do you need a 2 for! I just told you HOW TO MINE SUPER FAST SUPER EFFICIENT DIAMONDS!!!!

I agree with the springiness. In fact, I plan on battling the Wither several times just to get enough Nether Stars to make several for my fortress. One for the area around the corner guard towers and several more to cover the parts of the fortress. Then I'll just screw around by jumping with Jump Boost II all over the place. It will be magnificent.

Useless my ass
What? Faster diamond mining? How is that in any way useful.
Yep, and it only costs more resources than you could accrue by mining in a forty-block radius. C:
1. Mine away from home until you can make a beacon.
2. Make beacon, configure for mining bonuses until you have mined all under your base, switch beacon to combat buffs.
3. ????
4. PROFIT!

IF you want to ONLY mine really, really close to the beacon, sure, it's not useless. If you want to mine more than 40 blocks away in any direction (this includes 40 levels deep into the ground) you get to make another damn pyramid. I've never had a mine that encompasses such a ridiculously small area. Or a cave system that was that tiny.
I cant imagine how spending 1500 ingots/emeralds/diamonds to do a REALLY SMALL MINE (and a really shallow one) somewhat faster, or to make a quite small structure somewhat faster, is even remotely worth it. Particularly since, if I want to mine stuff faster..... just enchant picks. That does NOT take up 80 squillion resources. A pick with Efficiency 3 or 4 can be *very* fast.
Seriously, why not 2 blocks for the first tier and 3 for the second? It makes no sense T_T
Yeah, doesn't make a lot of sense. Some of the beacon's powers aren't very practical. Like some have pointed out, mining haste isn't useful within the beacon's range.
The only ones I might view as useful would be strength and regeneration, and maybe speed too.
I think you should be able to select effects from the list of all available positive potion effects, excluding instant health and invisibility. I'm sure I could find a use for water breathing and fire resistance, for example.
Also, why can't I pick any two effects I want with a fully powered beacon? Maybe I want speed and jump boost, not speed and regeneration.
I think the beacon needs work still.

I agree. It would be great being able to have super jumpy-ness and being able to run fast at the same time, without the use of potions and multiple bacons.
You should just see what happens when you use an Unbreaking III, Efficiency V gold pick with Haste II on stone. Or an Efficiency IV Diamond Pick with Haste II on obsidian.

Jump Boost 2: 2 1/2 blocks
GENIUS.

Danger zone.
