I think Mojang is just experimenting now, seeing if critics will whine or anything like that. They aren't afraid to cover new ground, and as it says, it's just a work in progress thing. I mean, look what happened to giants and gears. The ideas were scrapped and replaced. (Not so much for giants though) I'd like to see where they're going with this.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
Personally, I'm not interested in the buff aspect at all; I'd just enjoy a beacon that's visible from far away. Accordingly, I think it's an undue burden to have to put 9 mineral blocks underneath it just to get it to be a spotlight.
I love the new beacons, work great, will be amazing for great buildings, for survival mode, pvp, and adventure maps!
Though I think the blocks used hould have an effect, maybe through different tiers? Emerald>diamond>gold>iron maybe?
I agree with the tier idea. Because iron is so easy to get, it should have a low power. While emerald is very rare, so it should be more powerful. And when combined ores make the pyramid, the power level becomes combined.
I would have liked to have creative only block for adventure maps, that lets the mapmaker set what effects to give to the players without the pyramid and beacon. It will be overpowered if you can craft it and use it in your base

Because using 1400+ ingots/gems on something like this is totally over powered /sarcasm
I only use it for the looks ^^
But it will be interesting to see what they do to it through these snapshots
Agreed. I might not even make a pyramid. I might just put the block in the center of town for ... absolutely no reason at all. Mainly just because it looks cool
ratios are in the form (blocks affected : ingots/gems invested)
the flat (circular) area affected is the most practical to look at (as if the pyramid were built with its top level with the surface) and you'll notice, the level 1 pyramids are 3 times more cost effective than level 4 pyramids. bigger pyramids are slightly more justified (but still not as efficient as level 1) if the player will have access to multiple levels (such as in a cave) taking advantage of the square-cube law, but any pyramid built underground will need a skylight dug to it.
Yeah, but I am now the developer of CraftBook and I made most of those things... And he isn't part of the team, he just was there at the meeting.
...you do realize you probably weren't the first person to think of these things? Don't assume because it's similar to your thing it means it's direct copying.
Uh, I don't know if this is true for anyone else, but I can't see the light beacon. Only the WIP block. I have Java 7 update 5, Windows 7 professional.
Is there a good reason why the devs won't bring back the scrapped beta 1.9 pre-release 3 crystal (sky dimension) blocks for the final beacon block texture. I mean seriously, those things looked beautiful.

In multi-player with 5 or more people it doesn't take long to amass a ton of iron. I can get a stack of iron alone in about an hour or two. Really after my first 1-3 days in minecraft I just start making iron blocks because I have so much. I usually stop about that point, as long as I've been playing, I don't like to mine anymore.
And I'm going to say I thought the block was a joke at first. It really doesn't have that old minecraft feel. But in new minecraft with potions, enchantments, enderdragons...eh, whatever. I'd rather minecraft went in techology way like buildcraft/industrial rather then believe in magic and fantasy. But magic is the way the game's going.
I really liked the idea, it looks amazing. But, otherwise, it's a little OP...
And I'm sure that the old Classic/Alpha players won't like it. It changes a little the way to play Minecraft...

level 1 = 9 blocks = 81 ingots/gems => radius 16 = 804 blocks^2 (ratio 9.92:1) = 17157 blocks^3 (ratio 211:1)
level 2 = 34 blocks = 306 ingots/gems => radius 24 = 1809 blocks^2 (ratio 5.91:1) = 57905 blocks^3 (ratio 189:1)
level 3 = 83 blocks = 747 ingots/gems => radius 32 = 3216 blocks^2 (ratio 4.30:1) = 137258 blocks^3 (ratio 183:1)

Effectively, you are leaving out two very popular genres of maps then. Survival and CTM. And that's bad.

They need to consider it, seriously.
The old texture is a placeholder.
It's only removed from the creative menu, you can still spawn it via commands.
the WIP block is the Beacon Block doofus...
Is it just short for fire resistance or something else...
Doofus, he means that he can't see the light beam (beacon) but he can see the WIP block (the Beacon Block).
...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
