Well I'm kind of surprised there's no discussions about it here. Does it even count as a future update? Technically it's a whole new game. Anyway...
What do you guys think about Minecraft Story Mode? From what I understand, it's going to be a series of episodes (not sure if the game itself will contain a bunch of episodes, or if the episodes themselves will be separate games like Half Life) about Minecraft. The news page says "The stories are not meant to be Minecraft "canon" - sorry, no secret official history for Steve!" so I guess they're just random stories set in the Minecraft universe.
My personal theories/predictions:
- The episodes will not feature Steve, at least not as a main character. Characters will probably be other humans, or maybe villagers. I think this because it says it's supposed to be "as Minecrafty as possible" but not interfere with actual Minecraft canon, so a good way to do this would be by making minor characters into the main characters.
- Maybe there will be something where you play as a mob. For example, you could be an enderman trying to find his way back home (the teleporting mechanic would be cool, as well as picking up 1 block at a time vs. having an inventory) or a squid just derping around until your family is attacked by guardians and you have to go on an adventure to save them, or something like that.
- The gameplay itself will be somewhat different from Minecraft. I don't know how, but it's obvious that a story-driven game would not work in an infinite world where you can go off and do whatever you want. Maybe they'll solve this problem by restricting where you can go (so like if there's an episode where you're a bat stuck in a cave, and you can't break stone so you have to follow the storyline and escape the normal way) and giving you objectives that you have to complete before you can move on.
- Easter eggs! This is more stating the obvious than it is making a theory, but there's definitely going to be easter eggs in this game. It's just something they would do. Expect Borderlands references, Herobrine, and cake.
So what do you think about Story Mode?

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
i have played my fair share of tell tale games (the walking dead jurassic park and right now tales form the border lands) which i can say they did a good job for all these games the storys in them are really good (so far tales form the border lands is my favorite but am a border lands junkie) but who ever thought this was a good idea minecraft story mode should be fired awful idea. i mean it cant have a deep story which you care for people and want to cry when they die (the walking dead) and you cant have a funny story that makes you laugh (borderlands) cause if you know border lands humor you know its not child friendly

i think we should all use common sense and logic when we answer and ask a question but always stay open minded
just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife, big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed
EXACTLY what I thought. Minecraft is more of a child based game, and dosent have a specific sotry line to it. Sure, there is the enderdragon... But what are they gonna do when thats done?
My prediction would be like it would have a normal story, just that it happens in the context of Minecraft...
Not my right to judge, but I hope they still come up with something creative
I think that mod makers and map builders are already seeing a very nice challenge in that game...
i dont think there is going to be much modding in that game cause if its like any other tell tale game its going to be choice based

It's a mix of my two favorite games (Telltale and Minecraft), it's going to be AMAZING. Also, I don't really think it's going to be too minecrafty. You aren't really going to be able to build things, or mine things the way you'd normally. There may be an option to go mining and you get in a cave, and have to choose which direction to go, and depending on which you chose you get a certain item at the end. It's probably just going to be people, and have an actual story line, not just minecraft.
I'm really, really, REALLY looking forward to this. I personally really do hope it tells Steve's story.
But Steve (heh), what about Minecraft being your own story, etc. etc. etc. rant, etc.
Well think of it like this. Your Minecraft character can travel to different worlds right? And different servers, which are worlds which multiple people are able to access?
Minecraft: Story Mode doesn't have to be THE Minecraft story. Its A SINGLE Minecraft Story, in A SINGLE Minecraft World, in a UNIVERSE of worlds, dimensions and realms
I doubt you would do animals and evil mobs, and that only leaves villagers, and Golums. Villagers cant fight, and golums would just make a weird story. That leaves... other players. Frankly, this thing sounds like a mojang-supported role-playing-map. This sounds like it will be interesting to see how it will turn out. cant wait.
I'm ok with Story Mode. Minecraft has always had a sort of subtle 'story', what with going to the nether, defeating the enderdragon, etc. I think Telltale could make an interesting game of that, so long as they keep it reasonable.
I don't see how they're going to implement a dialogue system like what their other games have without it seeming horribly out-of-place in a silent world like Minecraft... perhaps it really will be entirely choice based, and free of dialogue, with some sort of text-based narrator or internal monologue guiding the player's choices.
I like the idea of a story mode. There's a lot they could expand upon in universe while still keeping the minecraft world a mystery. But just a random story in the context of minecraft seems....stupid. I'm fine with large storys of any kind within minecrafts universe. but dong a game on it seems pointless.

I occasionally make textures/models for random people. Contributed to: Tinker's Construct, Growthcraft, and Animals+
PixelQuest 2, my new 1.10 RPG/rougelike-inspired modpack, is coming soon!

Very genius, much smart, wow.
you know what i mean xD
Yeah, it would suck if they took away Minecraft's sandbox feature.

Minecraft: Story Mode is not Minecraft. It has no snapshots.
