I remember seeing a tweet from Dinnerbone saying that the current shader system is still in work but that in the future it would be able to do something similar to the shaders mod.
I sure hope that shaders become viable so that I can stay on my normal shaders on this crappy laptop, yet get more FPS since good shading would be the "norm".
